Stanfield missed a chunk of his sophomore season due to injury, so seeing him on the floor on a consistent basis should allow for a more accurate evaluation of his improvement this spring/summer. He flashed a little bit of everything over the weekend as the 6’6″-6’7″ forward shot it with accuracy from outside against the zone, made good decisions at the high-post both as a scorer or distributor and did a nice job of establishing deep position inside to battle for second chance opportunities. will form one of the more versatile frontcourts as both present intriguing skill sets as threats to dribble, pass and shoot from all three levels of the floor.

-Stanfield’s development was on a steady uphill trajectory over the course of the season, serving as an effective primary option in his sophomore year that has made improvements to his motor–especially on the defensive end of the floor. Stanfield got up for big games against other star players or high level teams, improving his defensive instincts over the course of the season to stay down on shot fakes and contest multiple putback opportunities around the rim to close out possessions for his team. His midrange is still his bread and butter but Stanfield is more effectively taking wings off the bounce to earn trips to the FT line or finish above the rim. It’s often difficult to be one of the focal points at the top of the scouting report on a rebuilding team, but Stanfield got progressively better at remaining grounded emotionally to serve as a leader for a scrappy CH group that should improve on their win total next season. Really interested to see his Melo group this spring and summer.

-Probably the most well-rounded performance that I’ve seen from Stanfield as he got to the line, scored through contact around the rim, knocked down a C+S 3, and got to his spots for midrange pull-ups throughout the game. The signs of maturity have continued, as Stanfield is growing on me as a prospect that is developing more of a next-play mentality that is aiding him at both ends of the court. The sophomore had a great duel with Simley, with the skilled wings trading shots and finishes at the rim throughout the game but especially the 3Q. Stanfield finished through the contact in transition several times, hit a C+S 3 from the wing, lifted to the top of key for a catch and face 18′ jumper, poked out a steal then scored through the contact at the other end, scored the putback on a free throw attempt, rotated over well to block shots on the weak side twice, and had a beautiful spin and baseline pullup on the left side that hit nothing but net over the double-team.

Stanfield makes his climb into the top-10 as he’s been the primary option for the Cardinals as a sophomore. He possesses positional size and a versatile skillset that allows from him to play the 3-5 positions at the high school level. He can take advantage of mismatches by using his off the dribble game against slow-footed bigs or utilize his size and strength against lighter wings. He has the athleticism to play above the rim with a clear path, soft touch on his jumper off the catch and continues to trend in the right direction as a defensive paint presence with timing as a weak side rotator. Moving forward, things to improve on can come with continued training and the maturation process. Getting quicker laterally, more explosive vertically and continuing to tighten up his ball handling as he’s shown this season will only further boost his stock both here and among college programs.

-Stanfield has really improved his motor and attention to detail on the defensive end of the floor as a mobile W/F tweener with a ton of upside. Stanfield is timing his contests better as a help defender to block more shots from the weak side and has improved the skill base to push the ball up the floor in transition on his own. He also is a dependable shooter from the elbows both off the catch and in transition. If he can continue to learn to channel his emotions into a more controlled effort to stay out of foul trouble, we will only see his production continue to increase for a feisty Calvert Hall group.

-The motor has really improved for Stanfield as a young prospect that can now affect the game in both phases. Stanfield started things out with a C+S 3, waited for the fly-by then stuck a midrange jumper in transition, hit a smooth crossover into a long 2, knocked down a face up 3, and anticipated the reverse layup in transition and blocked it. The most encouraging sequence came on a missed 3 of his from the wing that he followed up with a face cut and reverse layup with the left hand. Want to see Stanfield use his size/stride advantage to turn down long 2s and get to the rim for easier layups or draw fouls at the rim. Truly believe that an expanded shot diet would make him even more difficult to guard.

Stanfield’s best moments on Sunday came in the morning games where the 6-foot-6 wing displayed his ability to score from all three levels. In this sort of event where the opposing defense isn’t exactly operating on the string, Stanfield’s willingness as an off-ball mover is the catalyst for getting him open looks at the basket. He can attack wild closeouts with a long first step before getting into his pull-up with balance or use those long strides to get to the rim through traffic. He operates well in the mid-post where he can face up and attack his matchup off 1-to-2 dribbles or with enough space, can rise over the top and knock down shots. The other aspect of Stanfield’s game that doesn’t waver is his motor. He’s going to run the floor with consistency and purpose, be in the mix for 50/50s, and make multiple efforts on the defensive end. He was voted into the top-30 Cream of the Crop game due to his production throughout the weekend.

Stanfield had his best outing in a win over St. Elizabeth (DE) where he registered a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds. It was an example of Stanfield exposing mismatches with his blend of size and skill. He was at his best posting up on the block or mid-post where he could get to his over the shoulder hooks or tough fadeaways out of face-up scenarios. The sophomore forward also showed improvements in getting downhill from the high-post and finishing with his left hand. He’ll be expected to shoulder some heavy lifting for the Cardinals this season in the BCL/MIAA.

Billy has great mechanics, incredible footwork, fundamentally sound, moves with intention off the ball, skilled, makes crucial jumpers, finishes at the rim & plays with pace. Billy proved to be efficient in the paint with his unique blend of size, mobility, and fluidity. He showed natural instincts around the basket, controlled the glass on both ends, and finished with touch and control. Using his length to alter shots, grabbing tough rebounds, or converting in traffic, Stansfield’s presence was felt all season long. With his tools and growing skillset, he’s one who should continue to earn attention throughout the spring and summer with his production.

Stansfield stood out with his impressive performance, showcasing his versatility and scoring ability. His height and agility made him a formidable presence on the court. Arguably the most impressive long-term prospect for the young Calvert Hall team, Stansfield has a pretty smooth approach and quality balance between interior and perimeter scoring. Stansfield has excellent length and a frame that should continue to add strength over time. He moves very well for his size and should have more attention as a Division 1 scholarship-level prospect, especially given his arsenal of tools and ability.
