Riverside Brookfield Summer Shootout Day 1: Top Prospects

We saw some electrifying performances at the Riverside Brookfield Summer Shootout this weekend. With 84 of the top teams in Chicago and throughout Illinois going head-to-head, there were plenty of players who elevated their stock and gave standout performances. Let's recap the players who made our heads turn on Day 1.    [player_tooltip player_id='2125615' first='Dion' last='Lane'] Jr. showed his relentless motor on both offense and defense in a dominating 55-36 win over DePaul Prep and close 73-64 loss against East St. Louis. An undersized guard, Lane Jr. played bigger than his size, securing multiple steals in traffic, pulling up with a consistently smooth jumpshot, and creating opportunities for his teammates, especially when attacking the lane and kicking out to open shooters. Lane Jr. showed great court vision and ability to be a “court general” alongside a noticeable toughness and hustle on defense, making him a special player to watch.     Edvardas Stasys showed his ability to impact the game above the rim with a 23 point performance vs. Rockford Auburn and a strong showing against Neuqua Valley early in the day. A tall, lanky forward, Stasys got to the rim with relative ease and frequently drew fouls by finishing strong through contact. Stasys also brought effort on the glass, using his length and hustle to battle for rebounds. His day was punctuated by multiple powerful slam dunks with the crowd cheering “Eddddd.” Stasys has room to improve his consistency as a shooter from beyond the paint, but showcased upside in each game he played. He showed both a swagger and a maturity to his game, commanding double and sometimes even triple teams by East St. Louis' squad to slow him down. With multiple steals, thundering dunks, a silky smooth jumpshot, and advanced basketball IQ, Pettigrew proved time and again at this tournament that he's a player to watch.     [player_tooltip player_id='2839878' first='Mason' last='Martin'] is a skilled guard who showed impressive ball-handling ability for his size in games against Benet Academy and Bolingbrook. Martin was noticeably smooth with the ball in his hands, with clean shooting mechanics on both his jump shot and free throws. Martin also moved well without the ball, making smart cuts to the rim. As he continues to develop, improving his shot selection by not taking unnecessary three-pointers and maximizing his shooting consistency will elevate his offensive potential. However, Martin's natural ball-handling skills, size, and versatility popped on the court throughout the first day of play.     [player_tooltip player_id='2469076' first='Travis' last='Brown Jr']. stood out from the competition in games against Riverside Brookfield and Andrew, with an especially impressive 28-point performance against Riverside Brookfield. Brown Jr.'s ability to push the pace on offense, fearlessly attack the rim, and score in a variety of ways – including throwing down powerful dunks for his 6'0 size – made his presence felt throughout the day. Brown also exhibited defensive playmaking potential with multiple steals and the quickness to disrupt opposing ball handlers and take them out of rhythm. As he continues to develop, improving his defensive consistency to match his relentless offensive motor will help him become a more complete two-way player. Rocca is a compelling 3 and D prospect who can drive to the hoop as needed. Rocca shot the ball well from beyond the arc and showed impressive drive to the basket when defenders overplayed his perimeter shot. He also hustled hard for rebounds with great hands and court awareness. Rocca's combination of size, shooting ability, and effort makes him a valuable two-way player with intriguing upside.     DeVrice Johnson is a dynamic 6'0 guard who brought a twitchy, explosive style of play and undeniable confidence to the court in wins against Bolingbrook and Evanston on the first day of play. He impacted the game on both ends, knocking down jump shots from every level and generating steals. Johnson carried himself with the swagger of a lead guard and embraced the role of team leader. At his best, Johnson looked like the type of player who can take over a game when needed and passed the eye test on a talented team for looking like the most well-rounded player on the floor.
