Looking Beyond the Sophomore Leap for Collegiate-Caliber 2028s

This upcoming season will begin to separate the good from the great in Kentucky's loaded 2028 class. Here are a few prospects that are coming off of breakout sophomore campaigns but could have a lot left in the tank:    Joaquin made one of the biggest jumps of any 2028 prospect in the state between his freshman and sophomore year. His physicality as a slasher serves him well, allowing him to absorb contact en route to the rim. Once there, he finishes at a high level in various capacities, especially when given the opportunity to rise up for a slam. His evolved athleticism and IQ plus improved ball handling and shooting mechanics have boosted his stock tremendously amongst the likes of D1 programs. Looking ahead, the Dragons might need him to increase his volume and efficiency from long distance to remain competitive in the 8th.     Jaidan earned himself a starting role for Trinity as a sophomore, one that he'll likely retain for the rest of his career as a Shamrock. His court awareness and quick feet make for an excellent rebounder on both ends of the court. He's great at cleaning up plays and creating second chances when needed. Jaidan has also shown steady improvement as a playmaker and outside shooting threat over the years. He has the skillset and size necessary to play and guard multiple positions. Moving forward, becoming a consistent threat off the dribble in the half court could be the key to unlock Jaidan's full potential.     Xadrian is a fiery on-court leader who has a contagious level of intensity. He's a shifty guard who establishes a smooth balance of scoring and facilitating. He uses a dangerous combination of speed, agility, and balance to create space whenever and however he sees fit. If anyone were to nitpick his freshman season, his shooting efficiency could be the topic of discussion. He made a statement as a sophomore, however, and proved his ability to knock down a high volume of shots at a high rate. For a Rockets squad that'll likely return its entire roster from last season, finding ways to win games could be Xadrian's biggest challenge.     Conner's game was reminiscent of his younger self after returning to Powell County for his sophomore campaign. He remerged as one of the best guards in his class and one of the best shooters regardless of class. He had an absolute monster season in terms of efficiency and stood out as one of the few athletes who flirted with the 50/40/90 mark. After losing majority of his coinciding production due to graduation, however, Conner will feel the pressure of performing without proven threats around him to rely on. Maintaining a high level of performance on both ends of the floor for the new look Pirates could boost his stock tremendously.     Prater has evolved into Perry's do-it-all glue guy and should remain so moving forward. He proved himself to be a three-level scorer who can get it done from anywhere on the offensive side of the court. He attacks the gap off the dribble and works efficiently as a playmaker once he gets to his spot. He also has springy athleticism that makes him a dangerous above-the-rim threat if he finds an opening and even more so in the open court. Filling out his thin frame and becoming a more willing shooting threat from deep, however, could turn him into a D1 prospect over the course of the next year.
