Charlie Hughes Showcase: Kyler’s Player Notes Part 3

There is no better event on the calendar from an evaluation or recruiting standpoint than the annual IBCA/IHSAA Charlie Hughes Showcase. This past weekend, which was a live evaluation period for Division I college coaches, most of the best teams in the state of Indiana will competed at Carmel and Westfield High Schools for an absolutely excellent three days of basketball. Prep Hoops Indiana had boots on the ground coverage from the opening tip-off to the final buzzer all weekend long. Here are some of my quick player notes from some guys that caught my attention over the weekend.    There is new kid on the block at Pike High School and he is extremely impressive. One of the bigger surprises of the weekend came from wanting Pike and their new forward [player_tooltip player_id='2444554' first='Vanden' last='Garner']. Transferring back to the state of Indiana after spending some time at OTE, Garner is a big time addition to an already loaded Pike team. He adds more versatility to them as a guy that can play inside-and-out.     Homestead was one of the best teams at Charlie Hughes with more than enough talent to be a Class 4A State contender. One of their top guys and their main ball handler in the backcourt was senior guard [player_tooltip player_id='2054869' first='Jake' last='Coolman']. I was real impressed with Coolman and what he did in the backcourt for the Spartans. Was real solid as a creator and being a sneaky option to hit some big time shots throughout the weekend.     There is a serious argument to be made that [player_tooltip player_id='2932419' first='Mack' last='Welker'] was the biggest breakout player at Charlie Hughes this past weekend. Welker was excellent in all four games being a guy that made all sorts of plays on the wing and around the basket. Was able to watch his buzzer beater vs Pike and take Fishers to the limit. Welker earned himself a lot of offers from his play this past weekend.     There was a point during Charlie Hughes on Saturday that I was just checking out multiple games. A game that made me stop in my tracks and watch was Jasper vs Hanover Central because of 2027 forward/center [player_tooltip player_id='2882765' first='Jaylen' last='Maners']. This was my first time seeing Maners and he may have been the best under-the-radar prospect I got eyes on this weekend. Was impressed with his size, strength and versatility. He is an explosive big man that had an impressive one-handed slam while being a big that can space the floor and pass.     There were many under-the-radar guards that finally had their breakout moment and one of the biggest of the weekend was the 42 points he scored in a win over Elkhart. Not only did he have a 42 points, he also scored 30+ in another game as well. Lewis is a real fun guard to watch with the speed and explosiveness he has when going downhill. Expect big time performances by him just like this weekend for Columbus East this season.
