We got out to the Metro State Camp this past weekend, and there was plenty of talent on display. It was great to see players take a break from the club scene and get us closer to what they will look like during the regular season. The bigs separated themselves at the camp and manned the middle. Here's who stood out.

Carpender is full of potential, and he has moments that show you just how high his ceiling really is. Cherry Creek was using the twin-tower lineup and just dominating the paint. Creek gets multiple second-chance opportunities, they dump it into the post, and let him go to work. He looked as if he had been working on over-the-shoulder hooks and shots that allow him to get easy baskets. He's a real 7-footer who uses his size, when he catches it he goes right up, and he has soft touch in the paint. Defensively, he's altering so many shots and making players second-guess going up on him. He should have some monster games this season, and if what we saw from him at Metro State camp is what we're getting this week, that Creek team is going to be one of the favorites.

[player_tooltip player_id='2138430' first='Christian' last='Cobb'] is one of those players whose big plays are so loud that they're game changers. He's a quick leaper who goes right up, he probes the paint and finds holes in the defense for dunks, and he's an aerial attack as well as guards throw it up and trust that he's going to come down with it. Those plays have given him a buzz all summer, and he came into the camp and had a few of those plays. Cobb is grabbing boards and pushing the break, he's trying to get to the paint and finish at the basket, and forces other bigs to foul him. We want to see more aggression from him with him being so versatile, but he's going to be a player who has some big games this year, with South having to dump it off to him. Big season ahead for him, and he's continuing to turn heads this summer.

When Vander is locked in and has the mismatch, he's a nightmare on the block as he's so big, and he can easily back defenders down. He has solid size, a strong base, and good footwork on the block, and you want to see him just go down there and score 3-4 plays in a row instead of settling for turnarounds and such. Vander cannot be stopped down low when he's attacking, and we saw that when he kept getting fouled and scored efficiently. Not many teams in the state have the bodies to slow down their twin-tower attack, and he should be able to progress in every single category this season, with how we saw him stand out at moments.

Malachi is a two-way standout who has good length, a motor, and moves extremely well. He had some tough finishes at the basket, went on a few runs where he looked to score down low, and even stepped out and broke defenders down with iso baskets off the dribble. It looks like Malachi has been working on his ball handling and going off the bounce to get to his spots. He had a few mid-range jumpers, he played a bit more on ball than he did a season ago, and also had some high-low finishes and dump-offs over the top. He will certainly get a bump in usage this year, and Fossil Ridge made sure that he was part of every action that they ran.

Brooks has the size that immediately standout and he's a traditional big man who is a two-way standout. Brooks was blocking shot son the block, not allowing easy baskets at the rim, and getting his hands on many plays. He also had a few rebounds that he grabbed and went right up with it, boards that he tipped out to teammates, and kept plays alive. Brooks is starting to see the offense catch up as he had a few drop-offs on the block when he quickly made moves, spun off of it, and had a few baskets. Legend is going to use him a lot more this upcoming season, and he should have plenty of eyes on him this season. Big day for him at MSU camp.

Cook is a player who turned heads this Spring at one of our events, so I was curious to see how he'd look with his high school team, and he did not disappoint. Cook played well in both games that we saw him in. Cook scored on the block, hit a few shots from the high post, and showed he could be a playmaker with the ball in his hands. He was finishing inside, setting screens, rolling, and doing plenty of the dirty work down low. He's one of the under-the-radar players who we feel is going to have some big moments this year, and he had plenty of moments at the camp. This was a stock-boosting event from him that he could build off of, and he looked like one of the better bigs at the event.
