PHBatl Powered by Dr. Dish: 17U Fury gets late 3 to beat 24: Up

Unable to attend the annual Prep Hoops Battle at the Lakes event due to a daughter graduating medical school, I decided to do a film study and caught the highly competitive 17U contest between the [program_tooltip program_id='2075672' first='Minnesota' last='Fury'] Zurn squad and 24: Up P32, played Saturday at Hopkins High School in the Twin Cities. Thanks to BallerTV, I was able to chart the game and came away impressed with both squads. Fury got a late triple from [player_tooltip player_id='2433532' first='Max' last='Beeninga'] to post a 76-75 victory in a game they trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half. Both teams feature potential scholarship players and the game attracted a large number of college coaches, who watched closely from the sidelines. In addition to Beeninga, Fury got strong showings from [player_tooltip player_id='2362161' first='Matthew' last='Johnson'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2052332' first='Trey' last='Theis'], among others. 24: Up was led by Birkir Eythorsson, [player_tooltip player_id='2487657' first='Sam' last='Fait'], [player_tooltip player_id='2371703' first='Jayce' last='Cook'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2836093' first='Keegan' last='DeGeorge']. With his team trailing by two and under 15 seconds left, Beeninga took a pass, quickly spotted up from nearly 25 feet and let go with a three-point shot that swished through to give the Fury a 76-75 lead while accounting for the final points of the game. Beeninga, who has committed to NCAA Division II Minnesota State Moorhead, hit shots and made big hustle plays throughout the contest. He is quick and disruptive on defense and a big-time shot maker from deep on offense.    ON THE RISE    A player who appears to be on the rise in Minnesota, Johnson was outstanding for the Fury on Saturday. He buried three-point jump shots from a couple of steps outside the arc, scored going to his left and put in shots going to his right. His offensive fireworks helped the Fury stay close when 24: Up was cruising along to a 12-point lead in the first half. Johnson recently picked up a NCAA Division II offer from Minnesota Duluth and his strong play against 24: Up might lead to more offers down the road.     Theis was active throughout the contest, using his size and strength to mix things up in the paint while also stepping outside and making some three-point shots for the Fury. The high academic prospect competes with a high basketball IQ and does a bit of everything for the Fury. He's more than capable of finishing with a double/double in points and rebounds each time he steps onto the court.     DeGeorge showed he can be successful as a point-guard in the matchup against the Fury. His quickness, ball handling and court vision were helpful to his team as was his on-ball defense. DeGeorge set up his teammates, but he also found opportunities to score himself as he finished with 10 points and had two huge baskets late in the tightly contested game. DeGeorge's ability is apparent when he's on the court and his mental and physical toughness were also impressive in the one-point loss.     Fait was instant offense for 24: Up as he came off the bench to score 12 of his 14 points in the first half, helping 24: Up to a 46-41 lead at intermission. Fait had a catch-and-shoot triple, scored three times with his length on drives to the basket, and used his aggressiveness and bounce to earn trips to the foul line. There is not question Fait can score, and his length and anticipation on defense led to some deflections for his team.     A rather quiet first half led to a loud second half for Cook, who popped in all but two of his 14 points after intermission. One of the state's more accurate three-point shooters, Cook swished four triples against the Fury and needed just a second or two to let go from deep due to his quick release. Cook is showing the ability to play both guard spots this spring as he also did a nice job of setting up his teammates. A physical player who competes with lots of energy on both ends of the court, Cook is a player scholarship schools figure to watch closely this month and through July.
