The first round of the MIAA D1 playoffs have concluded, with second-round games set for 3/3 and 3/4 tips. Below, I'll be highlighting some guys who had big-time performances in addition to some under-the-radar performances from lesser-known players.

Jackson Fournier has been the star for Saint John's this season, but in a close win against a talented and big Catholic Memorial team, it was their sophomore 6-foot-5 big man who showed out. Rauktis was a monster on the offensive glass and consistently out-jumped and out-toughed opposing bigs for contested rebounds. He also showcased some really nice touch around the rim. Rauktis has a bright future ahead—we'll see if he can grow any more in the next few years.

Nimaka is one of the most physically dominant players in the MIAA, and Malden Catholic's first round matchup against Algonquin really showed that. The 6-foot-3 wing is a blur in transition but also has explosive hops at the hoop. He can finish through contact and with control off of two feet or one, and there's simply nothing any of his opponents can do. Special athlete.

Roux scored 28 points in Andover's first round victory over Belmont, and 21 of them were in the first half. The problem with defending Roux is that he has a counter for everything you throw at him, and his ability to shoot the three ball is where it all starts. Don't play him tight enough and he'll shoot it, but crowd him and he'll blow by you for layups, floaters or jumpers. Roux will face a tough Marshfield defense tonight, but I'm excited to see how he handles it.

I don't think enough people understand how impactful Padden has been this season for a really solid Marshfield team. In an overtime thriller against Cambridge, he got to the front of the rim at will and consistently used slow steps and euro-steps to finish with contact. He's a lot stronger and more athletic than he looks, and he's the best player on a Marshfield team that has a chance to shock the world by beating Andover tonight.

With his 30 point performance in round one, Klass became the all-time leading scorer in Beverly High School history. He passed Rick Brunson—yes, Jalen Brunson's father—for the record. His well-rounded scoring attack, as well as his ability to get his teammates involved (he had 6 assists against Quincy), has been quite impressive to watch this season. Now he's in the record books forever.

English is an unbelievable finisher whose efficiency never ceases to amaze me. Against Lexington, the 6-foot-3 wing made a ton of difficult shots off the backboard and with both hands, in transition and in the half court. Even when he's heavily contested, he has a knack for getting a decent shot off and finishing with touch. English also defends, rebounds, and makes decisive extra passes.

Hill is only a freshman, and you can literally see him getting more comfortable as the games go on. The 6-foot-5 forward hit 5 threes in New Bedford's first round matchup, but he also used his size and strength to finish in the paint. Hill also made a couple nice dump down passes and looked more physically and mentally tough than he has in the past. Major growth for the freshman.

Against a Newton North team that was a hot sleeper pick to beat Springfield Central and perhaps even go further, Bey scored 21 points on 9 free-throw attempts and a host of layups at the rim. He's simply too big and skilled for MIAA bigs to contend with, and he's in significantly better conditioning shape than you'd think given his frame. Bey is Springfield Central's best chance at a final 4 run.

Bumila continued his ridiculous MIAA season with 32 points in a dominant Bishop Feehan win over Acton-Boxborough.
Almanzar is a senior starter and key part of what makes Central Catholic go, but I still don't think he's getting enough credit for what he means to them. Though he's undersized, the 5-foot-9 point guard does an excellent job handling pressure and making live dribble passes to his teammates for easy looks. Against Natick, he was also a pest in the passing lanes defensively and showcased some pretty special hands. Almanzar is a two-way player who runs the show confidently and effectively for Central Catholic.

Bobonnovich wasn't a guy I knew before Natick's first round matchup against Central Catholic, but he was a big part of what was a much closer game than people expected.
With 22 points and 14 rebounds in a first round matchup against Lawrence, Jackson only further solidified my take that Bridgewater-Raynham is the deepest team in this division. He isn't thought of as a star for this team, but the sophomore can dominate on the boards and in the paint in any given game due to his strength, size, and second-jump ability. It can be Jackson or a number of other guys for BR, which is what makes them so dangerous.

Dufresne isn't named Connor Houle or Ladainian Rodriguez, so he doesn't get talked about too much. But the 6-foot guard might be Attleboro's best defender—he's almost always deployed on the opposing team's best scorer, and he does a good job limiting them. He can also chip in offensively with three balls and athletic finishes in transition. Dufresne is a really nice role player who will continue to be an important piece for Attleboro moving forward.
