I attended the opening round of the Detroit Catholic League tournament at Marian High School, getting the chance to see the five Detroit schools and the three Toledo schools in the conference. In this article I'll break down the wing and forward standouts from the day of hoops.

Detroit Catholic Central has a handful of players who can hurt you on both ends of the court and Walker is arguably their top prospect. With offers to EMU, Detroit Mercy, Bowling Green and Oakland, regional mid major programs have already made Walker a priority. A money shooter from either corner, Walker knocked down shots off the catch off BLOB set plays or as just a spot-up option working off his teammates drive and kick game. A power athlete, Walker threw down an alley-oop that was thrown from near half-court . I wish I would've gotten to see a more competitive game for Detroit Catholic Central but I'll never hold it against a team for winning by 40+ points going into the fourth quarter.

Another Detroit Catholic Central standout, Gash plays with a sudden pace and tempo on the ball. Quick movements straight to the rim, Gash is an impressive open court athlete who puts a lot of pressure on the rim with the ball in his hands. Gash had the assist on the highlight play of the game with an alley-oop to [player_tooltip player_id='2561198' first='Andrew' last='Walker']. A dominant performance from Detroit Catholic Central, they will have a much tougher test in the semifinals.

An elite rebounder and energy big, Smith is a physical force who can dominate a game from inside the paint on both ends of the court. Smith had six early points off putback layups, showing his ability to crash the offensive glass. Late in the game, Smith had a pickpocket steal that led to a slam dunk to put the game away for Brother Rice. Smith finished one point short of a double-double, ending the game with nine points and 12 rebounds.

The flashes Chenault showed on Saturday are why he will be a stock riser in our 2027 rankings update this week. Chenault had a baseline drive and slam dunk, hit a right to left crossover into a floater and moved in transition like a clear Division I athlete. Still needing some time to polish his skills, Chenault's upside is through the roof and if he continues to produce at a high level he will see his recruitment blow up this summer.

Toledo St john's made sure Ohio wasn't shut out of the semifinals, being the only one of three Toledo area squads to advance. Kowalczyk knocked down a couple of 3-pointers, had a breakaway dunk but most importantly, made numerous big to big assists in this game. Kowalczyk's ability to force the defense to focus on him and find the open teammate helps make the Titan offense run in the half-court. Both [player_tooltip player_id='2288540' first='Coy' last='Hamic'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2433540' first='Jack' last='Goodnough'] scored easy buckets off passes from Kowalczyk in the win.

Coming out the gates aggressive, Hamic had eight points in the first quarter and continued to make an impact throughout the game. A skilled forward, Hamic could catch and finish easily in the paint. I like the size Toledo St John's can play with as Hamic, Kowalczyk and Goodnough all have the length to rebound and protect the rim. A multi-sport athlete, Hamic has taken a significant leap as a basketball player this winter.
