New readers: Use code Proia30

I watched several games from different leagues within the area last week and wanted to take the time out to recognize some of the top performers. Putting the ball in the basket is among the premium skills that college basketball coaches are looking for in modern day prospects. Let's break down a few of the top bucket-getters that stood out to me last week!

-Barrett returned to the lineup from injury to immediately make a splash for a very good Catonsville team with scoring outputs of 28, 20, and 23 in his first 3 games back. Loved his two way impact as he finished with 10 stocks (combined steals and blocks) in both the Hereford and Woodlawn games-- blocking shots both on and off the ball while doing a great job of jumping passing lanes or timing dribble cadences to collect the steal and get his team out in transition. The range on his jumper has also really improved, knocking down deep C+S 3s from well beyond that arc without needing to put the ball on the floor for a dribble. His ability to attack the outside shoulder on long closeouts got him past his matchup and into the teeth of the defense where he either scored at the rim or drew fouls or both. His five FTs down the stretch sealed the win against Hereford to give him 28 points on the night as the Comets were missing their leading scorer. His ability to serve as a slashing connector for his team lead to several assists to teammates for easy buckets on the short roll or after he snagged an offensive rebound. One of the most impactful players in the county on a team that should be the favorite in Section 2.

-Good seeing the progression and confidence from Selamawi from a senior that is really finding his way in the Catonsville rotation. Selamawi ripped away a steal when he doubled down on the post to prevent a basket and get his team going in transition, sprinted past the pack to receive a runaway layup pass over the top for the easy bucket, showed nice lift on his C+S corner 3 that hit nothing but net, and hit his defender with a smooth head fake before taking 1-dribble to create space and knock down the open jumpshot. Really liked his decision-making to beat his matchup to the ball on several long rebound and loose ball opportunities throughout the game.

10p vs Woodlawn

-Liked that Carter doesn't force the issue and gets his own points within the flow of the game as an unselfish shot-maker in the halfcourt. In the two games that I watched Carter hit a C+S 3 from the wing in transition, hit a corner 3, hit his matchup with a rip n go to blow by a long closeout and lay it up at the basket, blocked a shot to start the transition fastbreak before hitting a teammate with a crosscourt skip pass in transition for the open 3, and had a beautiful baseline drive and drop-off to the cutter for a bunny at the rim to put his team up 3 heading into the 4Q. His ability to see both man and ball while having the capabilities of guarding multiple positions makes him a valuable piece to the puzzle for Catonsville's defensive schemes.

13p 2r 1a 3s vs Springdale

-First time seeing Olorungbohunmi in new threads with the Flyers and he looked good at both ends of the floor. He has improved his handle to create for himself and others off the bounce, got to the rim at will, and was valuable defensively for PGCA against a Springdale starting lineup that features three different point guards. He hit a C+S 3 from the wing to start things off, raced back in transition to force a stop at the rim on several occasions, hit his matchup with the double crossover before drawing the contact and hitting the extension layup with the left hand late in the game for a key and1 bucket. There's an intriguing skillbase to work with here, it will be pivotal for him to choose the right AAU situation this summer for not only the exposure opportunities but for his development as a prospect.

9p 3r 2a 2s vs PGCA

-Woodard is always good for several LOUD athletic plays and this conference matchup with PGCA was no different. His ability to hang in midair to readjust and score around or over opponents raises his floor as a prospect. Woodard started things off with a pro hop with a high pickup to split the gap between two defenders and score at the rim, scored on a baseline cut from the corner to catch and land on two before pivoting to the rim to lay it in, had a 1-handed dime to the corner shooter off a middle drive, and collected a steal before hitting an acrobatic hanging double-clutch and1-finish at the rim late in the first OT period. His ability to pressure the basketball and guard 1-3 should make him a valuable commodity on the circuit this spring.

17p 2r vs Springdale

-First time seeing McQuarter with the Flyers and he does what he does best: get buckets. The smooth CG prospect gets to his spots within the halfcourt and can rise up effectively for pull-ups anywhere in the midrange. His run of three made 3s in a row midway through the 3Q brought the Flyers roaring back in this one to send the game to the first OT period. Love the pace that he plays with as a confident guard that can get hot in a hurry to flip games for his team. If he can improve the handle to use his scoring gravity while on a heater to make plays for others, and lock down opposing guards with consistency-- I can see him becoming a focal point for the Eagles and a guard that college coaches need to know in the 2028 class.
