Our friends at Prep Hoops Next do a great job of covering the middle school scene, but admittedly we here at Prep Hoops Indiana don't really follow the prospects until they enter high school. Generally speaking, aside from a few exceptions for the very top prospects, our first viewing of any incoming freshmen would be at the Charlie Hughes Showcase in June. Then, we host our annual Prep Hoops Indiana Freshman Showcase in the fall. For this first Watch List, which features over 150 prospects, if you did not play at the varsity level in June or attend our showcase it is unlikely that you are on our radar right now. However, that is why we update our rankings multiple times a year and spend so much time in the gym not just in the season, but throughout the offseason as well. This list will continue to grow rapidly in the coming months.

To begin our deeper breakdown of the Class of 2029 prospects we will highlight some of the top players who, if we were to rank them, would likely be in the Top 25 or so of the class. These players will be released randomly and in alphabetical order so there is no sort of "ranking" to be derived from these handful of articles.

Admittedly, we haven't seen much of Battles at all yet. However, we know that he will push for varsity minutes as a freshman at Mt. Vernon (Fortville) High School and has proven himself on regional/national stages as one of the top prospects in Indiana's Class of 2029. Battles has good positional size and athleticism in the backcourt and projects as a big time two-way perimeter prospect. He will undoubtedly be one of the top prospects in this freshman class.

Lawrence Central High School is loaded with talent this season, but Berryhill looked like he belonged when we attended an open gym a few weeks ago. The shifty 5'7" guard has the quickness, ball handling ability, and shot-making ability to compete against the best of the best. As he grows a little bit and can match his peers physically his skill level will shine even brighter. Berryhill is definitely one to watch in Indiana's Class of 2029.

Buckley played well at the Prep Hoops Indiana Freshman Showcase and stood out at times while playing against older competition at the Metro Indy Fall League. The 6'0" guard does a good job of creating separation on the perimeter. He is a good shooter off of the bounce and always a threat to get downhill to the rim. Hamilton Southeastern has a deep pool of veteran talent this season, but look for Buckley to emerge as a star in the coming years for the Royals.

Gates' best basketball will likely be several years down the road. However, he is already showing flashes of his insanely high upside. The 6'7" left-handed forward/center caught our attention at the Charlie Hughes Showcase in June with his ability to finish on the rim run and on the roll. He is a fluid athlete, very long, and will continue to take steps forward as he develops physically and gets stronger.

Stoudemire enters his freshman season at New Albany High School as one of the most anticipated Class of 2029 prospects. Fans in southern Indiana have been talking about him for a few years now and the Bulldogs will once again feature one of the best freshman in the state. The 6'2" guard is physically very strong and processes the game well beyond his years. Look for him to make a major impact at the varsity level from day one.

It isn't easy to crack the Homestead rotation as a freshman. The Spartans have one of the most consistent programs in the state and are coming off of a Class 4A North Semi-State appearance. However, Weaver is going to earn a bunch of minutes as a freshman. The 6'1" guard is a great athlete, handles the ball well, and provides some versatility in the backcourt. Weaver was a standout at our Prep Hoops Indiana Freshman Showcase.
