I was lucky enough to attend an open gym at Wayne Memorial High School last night. There was some high level talent getting up and down the floor. It was close to 1 year ago that I attended an open gym at the school last year and I said this on spot last night and I stand by this statement - Wayne Memorial as of right now, is deeper and more all around talented than last year. Let's take a closer look at some of the talent that was seen.

We'll start with the obvious, Allen is one of the best in the state and he looked the part last night. His fall away mid range jumper was so tough. Basically unguardable at this level. Allen hit triples in all sorts of ways, from contested to off the catch to creating space with his handles and firing off the bounce. He also effectively attacked the rim with the ball. Allen was very impressive with his vision and decision making, which was especially evident with his plethora of drop off passes across the lane.

Goins is making the move to Wayne Memorial and looked solid last night at the open gym. He's not just a shooter and he made that evident. Goins got a bucket by rim running on a cut, catch and score. He also used a height mismatch by putting his back to the basket, going baseline and scoring. Goins can still shoot though, and he hit a couple 3's over the top of defenders. He looked better and more aggressive on D as well. Goins used his length to contest shots.

Smith is a player to keep an eye on this season and he looked VERY solid at the open gym. He has a strong frame and he used it last night. Smith used a pound dribble, got position and sealed his defender leading to an easy bucket. He lowered his front shoulder and took the ball to the rim on a straight line drive. Smith showed athleticism as well. He had an in air put back basket and another lightning fast put back bucket. Smith did a great job finding space weakside when Allen drove and drew the D, which led to dump off passes and easy layups.

Dyer caught my eye early and often at the open gym. He looked VERY bouncy and athletic. He got off the ground high and fast. Dyer is going to make some highlight reel plays this high school season. He ran the floor and filled the wing. Dyer had an athletic lefty take to the rim as well. He also showed the ability to shoot from beyond the arc with a wing triple and a 3 coming off a dribble hand off.

This is a name and player to put in your memory bank. The young man looked like a player! Quick's mid range game was eye-popping. He hit a short jumper from the lane, and a mid range flip in bucket from the wing. Quick also passed well from the mid range with a feed over the top and a few touch passes. Quick then backed defenders down and scored over the top with touch. He was even active on the glass picking up multiple put back buckets.
