We talk about 20 players from the Twin Cities Takedown that impressed us on Saturday starting with [player_tooltip player_id='1560839' first='Xavier' last='Frelix'] of [program_tooltip program_id='2075685' first='Minnesota' last='Select']!

Frelix For Three

[player_tooltip player_id='1560839' first='Xavier' last='Frelix'] was the go-to guy for [program_tooltip program_id='2075685' first='Minnesota' last='Select'] and in both games we have seen this weekend, Xavier has went on three point shooting surges that changed the basketball game. Yesterday in a key overtime win over Fury Zurn, Frelix scored 23 points with five threes made and he sunk half of his 16 attempts with a lot of attention on what he was doing.

I'm not sure there are many shooters/scorers in the senior class at the two guard spot that are potential game changers like Frelix from Park Center. His lightning quick touch and ability to hit shots in small windows is the first part that separates him, and the second part is hitting those shots at a solid percentage.

This winter Frelix was hurt but once he got back on the floor he was the Pirate second leading scorer. When he gets more comfortable with his Select teammates and his shot quality improves, Frelix will be even better.

South Suburban Up and Comers

From Lakeville North and [program_tooltip program_id='2075672' first='Minnesota' last='Fury'] Goring, 6'4 forward [player_tooltip player_id='2140675' first='Owen' last='Brezinski'] played a little in the rotation a season ago but after watching help Fury Goring get an overtime win, I have a feeling he will have a much bigger role next year. He had a 17 point, 11 rebound double-double and Owen is skilled to push, shoot, and attack, and he boards in bulk too. Owen's play down the stretch led Fury to the win over [program_tooltip program_id='2821775' first='Buffalo' last='Legacy'].

Every year a nice handful of juniors go from deep bench or even the junior varsity in the South Suburban to a few finding their way to all league and several being key pieces. We may have seen a few of those players this weekend in addition to Owen! Here are some potentials:

[player_tooltip player_id='1560794' first='Kyle' last='Peterson'] (WOTN/Eagan) was a role player for Eagan last season but yesterday with WOTN he was a go to scorer making half of his dozen shots and he scored in an assortment of ways plus he created for others. The 6'3 wing had either his best day ever or he's about to really help Eagan who has so much coming back from his class.

Speaking of Eagan, the 6'8/6'9 [player_tooltip player_id='2118833' first='Kevin' last='Kemp'] has a chance to be a scholarship prospect. There just aren't many guys his size that move as well as he does getting up and down and moving laterally as well. Kemp has some explosion to finish as well as he gets off the floor quickly.

Lakeville South had a dozen juniors on their roster last season and four of them were in the rotation ([player_tooltip player_id='1560830' first='Casey' last='Fliehe'], [player_tooltip player_id='1560811' first='Collin' last='Johnson'], [player_tooltip player_id='2121334' first='Ryker' last='Sanders'], [player_tooltip player_id='2860493' first='Zane' last='Schroeder']). Fliehe has been playing well with the Fury Antl squad while yesterday, [player_tooltip player_id='2121335' first='James' last='Juaire'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2381969' first='Tyler' last='Steffen'] were helping WOTN Foley win games. Both were in double figures the game I watched and Steffen has a ball handling/separation ability that really caught me off guard.

[player_tooltip player_id='2815257' first='Pete' last='Kolak'] of Lakeville North hit three threes in the win over WC Wildcats.

[player_tooltip player_id='2845973' first='Jack' last='Burke'] scored ten a game for Rosemount a year ago and yesterday with WOTN, Jack did a great job against Jack Welch while scoring 14 points with six boards. Burke is a 6'4 frontcourt player.

Jack the Prospect

[program_tooltip program_id='2076005' first='West' last='Central Wildcats']/Pelican Rapids 6'8 big man Jack Welch helped his team to state this year and now he is the go-to guy for the Wildcats. Welch is in the process of learning how to be the main guy for his 17u team and there have been some tougher shots taken, but he's at the point where the potential is there for him to be in that spot.

Why is Jack that type of prospect?

For starters he is 6'8 and he moves very well in a lot of ways: getting up and down, moving his feet laterally to defend out of the paint AND moving to get to help spots and boards out of his area, and Jack is reasonably quick off his feet. The potential is there and he showed it getting his team to state.

Yesterday Welch hit a couple threes, he finished lobs at the rim, and Jack scored actively. There were some tough shots taken that hurt the percents but as he continues to work and learn, Welch will continue to grow as a prospect. And when the Northern Sun can stop worrying about transfers and start watching player again, he's a player they can get in and take a look at.

Pust Production

Minnesota Gold beat [program_tooltip program_id='2075674' first='Minnesota' last='Heat'] Conyers despite a piercing fire alarm noise throughout part of the game. How?

[player_tooltip player_id='1560760' first='Kyler' last='Pust']. The biggest thing Pust did was collect defensive boards and push the ball. His actively pursuing the basketball when opposing shots went up was essential. It ended the possession and quickly started the next possession forcing Heat to quickly go the other way. His speed eventually found shots for guys like Logan Becker and Miken Mattson the other way (and they combined for 29 points most of which was open perimeter jumpers) as the Heat defense was scrambled and Gold moved the ball for high percentage looks.

Pust attacked the rim for a dozen points and four assists plus he had ten boards totaling a double-double, but it was the overall process of the board-push-move the ball for a good shot that helped Gold get enough good possessions to get the win.

Quick Hitters

[player_tooltip player_id='2404942' first='King' last='James'] led Minneapolis Central Team Hollowell to wins in two of their first three games. Rebounding, he was a man among boys. There was also the comfortable board and push the other direction, and even better was the board-push-floor run from James. It was more double-doubles after a high school season of double-doubles for the 6'6 four man.

[player_tooltip player_id='2416947' first='Ayden' last='Green'] continues to be a player that impresses. I thought his state tournament production really helped Breck off the bench and yesterday when Hoop Habits was controlling every part of their game with Powerhouse, Green was outstanding. He knocked out open jumpers, helped push Hoop Habits for their numerous transition scores, and then attacked the ball handlers again with full court pressure

[player_tooltip player_id='1560875' first='Calvin' last='Peterson'] of [program_tooltip program_id='2075674' first='Minnesota' last='Heat'] Conyers (Minneapolis Roosevelt) isn't just a scorer that is playing the City Conference game and getting numbers, he's got good size and agility with the skills to create space and score the ball against good 17u competition.

More and more and more [player_tooltip player_id='2126126' first='Ray' last='Brau']. Just a constant force around the basket. It's rolls to the rim, put-backs, dump-offs, floor runs, etc, nobody works harder to get to the front of the rim to get numbers for the Hibbing standout. He had 20 points and nine boards for Fury 16 in a one score loss to [program_tooltip program_id='2075685' first='Minnesota' last='Select'] 17s. Not sure there is another 16u player doing as much for their team as Ray is right now.

And [player_tooltip player_id='2433532' first='Max' last='Beeninga']. I know he is entering a talented backcourt but there will be room for him. The junior-to-be is about to help the state champ Wayzata [program_tooltip program_id='2075965' first='Trojans' last=''] in the same way that he is helping the Fury with his late game heroics. Max had 15 for the Fury against the Select 17s and it included two clutch attacking overtime scores.

Buffalo is always full of skilled players and [player_tooltip player_id='2126866' first='Matthew' last='Jordan'] could be the next one. He had 15 points and eight boards against the Fury yesterday and hit a couple clutch jumpers down the stretch.

Aidan Gavin had 14 points in the second half for [program_tooltip program_id='2075449' first='East' last='Metro Bounce'] combining threes and clutch foul shots to beat [program_tooltip program_id='2078859' first='Starks' last='Elite']. Galvin played some 9th man time for East Ridge last year and after watching him shoot the ball yesterday we could see him have a solid role as a senior.
