Meridian won a regional championship this week to continue their undefeated season. Meridian wing John Lyman had a solid week. John is a Swiss army knife for Meridian, and his impact is felt in a big way defensively. John is a versatile defender who can guard almost any position on the court. He competes and rebounds well. John can knock down threes and does a good job getting to the rim. He had two 17-point games this week, including a double-double against Skyline to secure Meridian's spot in States.

If you want to see one of the more easy to watch teams in the state play, go and watch Riverside. I have watched this Riverside team as much as any team in the state, and I think they can compete with almost any Public School in the state. This team is an offensive juggernaut, and they have failed to score below 70 in February. Riverside won a Region title this week, and Junior Guard [player_tooltip player_id='2780090' first='Max' last='Lawson'] was outstanding. Max is an opportunistic defender who turns defense into offense. He is a good passer and someone who can get his bucket on his own. He set a school record with 9 threes in their region title win, and he averaged 25.5 PPG this week.

[player_tooltip player_id='2382874' first='Mason' last='Ridgeway'] is someone I have watched a lot of the past few years, and he is the guy for this Riverside team. Riverside's offense dominated the first half against Stone Bridge in the region semis. Mason will play at the next level, and he has grown a lot as a prospect from someone who was unranked to now being one of the best Wings in NOVA. Mason is a good passer and a terrific scorer on all three levels. He defends, rebounds, and has great length at 6'6. He had a 25-point and 13-rebound performance in the semis, then had 22 in the final.

Someone who caught my eye in the few times I've watched him this year is Stone Bridge Guard [player_tooltip player_id='2788037' first='Kevin' last='Reyes']. Kevin isn't always the most efficient, but when you watch him, you see a lot of potential. Kevin is a scorer first, but I think he is a pretty good passer, and he could end up being more of a lead guard. Kevin is a fantastic shooter with a quick release. He won't blow you away with athleticism, but he knows how to get to his spots, and he is a crafty finisher. He had 23 in a win over Massaponax before losing to Riverside, where he had 20 points. Efficiency can get better but this is still a name to watch in the future.

Jaylen Lemon had a nice week for Hayfield. Hayfield played an entertaining double OT game against West Potomac to clinch states and Jaylen Lemon was masterful. Jaylen had 25 points and 6 rebounds. He also had 15 in the regional finals loss against Woodson. Jaylen is the kind of wing every team looks for. You can never have enough 3&D wings, and Jaylen is a good example of that. He is a knockdown spot-up shooter and can put the ball on the floor and create when he needs to. He is an active defender and has good size as a wing.

You could argue that there hasn't been a more impactful transfer in NOVA public school ball than [player_tooltip player_id='2612817' first='Colin' last='Byrd'] this year. This team was solid early in the year before he came, but he has taken Tuscarora to the next level. Colin leaving PVI was the right move, but in a lot of ways, it looks like he's taken a lot from being around that much talent. Colin understands how to be a highly effective scorer without dominating the ball, and it opens up the rest of this Tusky offense. He is an elite shooter and plays hard. Colin had 22 in a blowout over Loudoun County, then had 25 in a regional final win over Heritage.

South Lakes two district losses this year were to Westfield, and they met them again in the Regional Final. In the district final, Westfield held [player_tooltip player_id='1410534' first='Jordan' last='Scott'] in check, and he wasn't a huge factor in the game. On Friday, it was very different. Jordan dominated this game on all levels, and Westfield had no answer for him. Jordan is one of the best players in the state, but doing this against an outstanding Westfield team that already beat you twice impressed me. He had 34 points.
