One of the top shooters in Ohio had it going on Saturday with 38 points in just three quarters of action. Walking in to a few top of the key 3-pointers and also hitting some 3-pointers off movement on the catch, Elwer was making it rain in a variety of ways. His circus shot and-1 finish was his most impressive layup of the day, showing he could score at the rim as well. With Elwer and his younger brother shooting it at a high level from downtown plus a tough defense, DSJ is one of the top teams in Division IV and a threat to emerge out of the loaded Division IV NW region.
Lutheran West has been on a tear recently, knocking off Lutheran East and Garfield Heights before taking out Lima Sr on Saturday. The Longhorns got production from a variety of players with Fairly and Tino Yli-Junnila Tino Yli-Junnila 6’5″ | SF Lutheran West | 2024 State OH leading the charge. Fairley has good length and really gets after opposing ball handlers and forcing turnovers. One aspect of his game that’s taken a clear improvement this year is his perimeter shooting, knocking down a corner 3-pointer and a two-dribble mid-range pull-up. If Fairley can improve his left hand, he could find it easier to score on drives in his college career. With a strong playoff run, Fairley could see some more college programs come calling late in the cycle for 2024 recruits.
Another Division II powerhouse got a signature win as Shelby held off a furious Findlay rally late. Bruskotter made some big shots in this one, helping the Whippets gain a signature win heading into the playoffs. I thought Bruskotter used his length to get some big boy rebounds that got extra possessions for his team. His buzzer-beating 3-pointer in the first quarter was a display of Bruskotter’s perimeter shooting and natural touch. Shelby has been one of the top small-town programs in Ohio the past five seasons and this could be the year they get over the hump and make the final four.
Highlights
Troy Christian got the biggest win of the day, taking down the host Titans for their best win of the season. Penrod is already committed and looking to end his high school career with a deep playoff run. This win shows what type of potential Troy Christian has in the playoffs. I was impressed by Penrod’s shot-making ability and using his quickness to pull-up. A big time competitor, Penrod makes impact plays on both ends and his energy drives the rest of his team.
