A dream season for Delphos St John’s ends unbeaten with a state championship. Elwer, one of the top players in Ohio finishes his career as a state champion, a two-time Mr Basketball finalist and one of the top scorers in OHSAA history. Elwer was unable to be stopped from getting to the paint, using his physical advantages to draw fouls and get to the foul line. The game swung when Elwer had a power finish off two feet to end the first half and then Elwer had an and-1 layup and pull-up 3-pointer to extend the lead to 17, the largest it got all day. Elwer also helped close the game after Kalida made a run to make it interesting again in the fourth quarter. Congrats to Elwer for finishing his historic high school career on top.

My favorite to unseat Johnson as the winner, Elwer is one tough customer on both ends of the court. You won’t find many better shooters or more skilled guards on the ball anywhere in Ohio. It also helps that Delphos St John’s was one of the top small school teams in the state last season and project as favorites in Division VII this year. Elwer is also committed at the Division I level to Furman, the last non Division I commit to win Mr Basketball was Justin Fritts back in 2012 for Mentor.

I’m a big fan of Delphos St John’s this year due to their collective toughness, perimeter shooting and defensive identity. It helps a lot to have a Mr basketball candidate in

who was dynamite all day. Elwer is so tough to keep in front as defenses are so worried about his 3-point shot that they pressure up on him and hand check him often. Elwer is tough enough to play through physicality and earned numerous free throws (they gave points today instead of having players actually shoot them) throughout the day. I also liked some of the sets that the Blue Jays ran for Elwer to get the ball off back cuts and on the block. Look for Delphos St John’s to give teams fits all season with their style of play.

In a tight victory where Midwest Basketball Club came back from an early deficit, Elwer came up clutch with some impressive shot-making and also handling pressure with strong decisions. Elwer has been a consistent performer at the 3SSB level each of the past two seasons so him standing out shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody. A few moments in the half court where Elwer was able to create space before pulling up definitely caught my eye as a skill Elwer must do at the next level to reach his offensive ceiling. In addition to his 13 points on 6/9 from the field, Elwer had 4 assists and did a nice job of taking care of the basketball when Upward Stars would blitz his pick and roll action.

Everyone knows Elwer’s ability to score the ball but what shined this weekend was his ability to kill in pockets of the game. He rarely shot around the rim but seemed like he still shot 90% from the field. The ball barely seemed to touch the rim when he shot it. He was ready to shoot it when he was open and then put the ball on the floor one time to get to the open spot. He also showed the ability to set the table for his teammates as well.

Elwer had a monster summer on the 3SSB circuit, becoming one of the most efficient players on the circuit at the 16 U level due to his elite shot-making ability. That elite hand-eye coordination translates over to the diamond where Elwer pitched a no-hitter in the playoffs for Delphos St John’s. As a sophomore, Elwer was named first team all MAC as a baseball player after he led Delphos St John’s to an unbeaten basketball season that included some incredible 30+ point performances.

Elwer led 16 U 3SSB in scoring efficiency according to synergy, a remarkable statistic from the small-town guard. After a dominant sophomore season for Delphos St John’s, Elwer proved this spring and summer that he can produce Vs some of the top talent in the country. Elwer is a strong guard who doesn’t get pushed off his spots and is an elite shooter. Only holding one Division I offer from Toledo, I expect Elwer’s recruitment to pick up steam very quickly.

Elwer was one of the most efficient scorers on the 3SSB circuit this spring and hit the ground running in July. Another one of the elite shooters nationally, Elwer makes a very high percentage of looks he’s able to get off the catch. Another aspect of his game I love is his balance, Elwer plays off two feet and uses his improving strength to score at the rim. Holding one offer from Toledo, I’d imagine Elwer will add to his list by the end of the month if he continues to play like this.

One of the top shooters in the midwest, Elwer was getting to his spots for Delphos St John’s on Friday. While everybody knows about his elite 3-point game, I was impressed with how Elwer found the range to score inside the arc. Doing a nice job of creating contact first and playing off defenders, Elwer can use his body to get the right angle and position to shoot and score. When he gets a head of steam, Elwer is shifty enough to get around the first defender at the rim to score as well. One of the most productive high school players in northwest Ohio, Elwer has already become a staple for regional high school fans, expect his college offers to come soon as well.
