Nobody knows more about the freshman class than we do at Prep Hoops Indiana after holding our annual Freshman Showcase in August that featured over 200 of the best incoming prospects in the Class of 2027. Now, those players are almost finished with their respective freshman seasons. Let’s take a look around the state and highlight eight prospects who have stood out with their immediate impact on the Indiana High School Basketball scene.
***There are obviously many more freshmen than these eight making big contributions at the varsity level. We are aware of them and will highlight more names in the coming weeks. However, these are the eight we went with today.***
Chase Devine
Chase Devine
Among the high school programs that report stats to MaxPreps, this Bremen High School guard ranks fourth among freshmen in the state averaging 16.1 points per game. Devine is an excellent shooter connecting on 43 of 115 attempts from deep so far this season while also showcasing his ability to score off of the dribble inside of the arc. Don’t sleep on this prospect up in the northern part of the state.

English has been the leader of a loaded freshman class at Liberty Christian. There of the team’s four leading scorers are Class of 2027 prospects with this 6’2″ guard averaging a team-leading 12.7 points to go with 5.1 rebounds per game. He is an excellent driver with high-level athleticism and length. Really intriguing prospect to keep an eye on for years to come.
Will Hegwood Will Hegwood 6'1" | PG Roncalli | 2027 IN

Hegwood has stepped in right away and provided valuable ball handling for a Roncalli team that needed some help in the backcourt. He has good size for a freshman guard and is averaging 5.1 points per game along with 2.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists. Already a comfortable facilitator, look for Hegwood to emerge as more of a primary scoring option beginning next season.
Contributing from day one in the rotation of a successful Class 4A program is not something that is easy to do in the state of Indiana. However, Kobe stepped in immediately and has carved out a role for the Portage Indians. The talented 6’0″ guard is averaging 3.8 points per game for a team with hopes of competing to win Sectional 2.
Josiah Mays Josiah Mays 5'9" | PG Michigan City | 2027 IN

One of only 20 freshman averaging in double-figures across the state, among teams that report to MaxPreps, Mays is having an excellent season at Michigan City High School. The quick, shifty point guard is averaging 10.2 points per game while showcasing all-around playmaking skills. Mays is absolutely one of the top Class of 2027 prospects in The Region.
Coming from excellent basketball bloodlines as the grandson of Billy Sheppard, this 6’1″ guard at Sheridan High School scores it like his grandpa. Page is averaging 13.6 points per game this season and had a game earlier this season where he made a school record nine three-point shots on his way to 39 points. He has already made 50 three-pointers on the season at a 38% clip.
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more physically put together freshman in the state of Indiana. Paschall is a tank on the basketball floor and uses that physicality to his advantage. The 6’5″ forward is third on the Fort Wayne Snider team in scoring at 8.7 points per game while leading the way on the boards averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. His ability to score around the basket using his size and strength is not something you see from a freshman at the varsity level very often.
Even while playing alongside some very talented, veteran plays, this 5’11” freshman guard has stepped up and made an immediate impact for the Chesterton Trojans. Ray is a very good three-point shooter connecting on over 40% of his attempts this season. He can also serve as a playmaker with the ball in his hands and will only continue to get better as he grows and physically matures. Look for him to take on a primary scoring role next season after the Trojans get hit with some graduation.
