Continue ReadingThe start of the 2023-24 season is less than two months away and as fall leagues have been taking place, the Class of 2024 rankings have been updated and released. There was some movement in the second five of the top ten, including the addition of a newcomer. Here’s how things shook out.
Counts was one of the big stock risers during the off-season and things really kicked off when he played with his DENY Basketball AAU squad at a PrepHoops Circuit event in Minneapolis. At that event, college coaches loved his versatility and the Wilsonville senior quickly became a bona-fide D-II recruit at the very least. He crossed the line over into D-I territory and after visiting St. Thomas in Minnesota, he decided to commit early. Making an early D-I decision is the easiest way to move up in the rankings and that’s exactly what Counts did.
Coming in at #7 is Morris, who currently holds an offer from defending NAIA powerhouse College of Idaho and continues to receive calls from a number of schools, including D-I programs. The Roosevelt senior is arguably the top player under six feet tall in the entire state and his off-season included playing with the NW Rotary Rebels on the EYBL circuit, breaking ankles with his shifty moves and creating for himself and others. He’ll share some ball-handling duties this year with the Roughriders but will still be the main playmaker as Roosevelt chases the PIL and 6A titles.
Cade is the newcomer to the top ten – and all of the rankings as he’s moved in from out-of-state in California. The 6-foot-7 senior comes to Oregon to attend Rosemary Anderson Prep, of which we determined all the players should be placed in their respective class rankings. While our viewings of Cade are mostly from tape or in person at practice or one scrimmage, it’s clear the 6-foot-7 forward is worthy of a top ten ranking to start with. He’s long, runs the floor well, and is a shot-blocking presence as his offensive skillset develops.
Currently busy with football as Wilsonville’s quarterback, Gutridge certainly has proven himself as a basketball player as well as one of 5A’s most potent scoring threats. A good athlete, the senior can really get to the basket and finish, but is plenty capable of scoring at all three levels. Add in a hard-charging motor and a good feel for the game and there’s no question Gutridge is a hoops prospect. Given his prowess on the gridiron, the question may be whether or not the hardwood is in his college future – of which he currently holds scholarship offers, including ones from North Dakota and OIT.
Wrapping up our current top ten is White, making it three Roosevelt Roughriders at the top of the class. The six foot guard had another outstanding spring/summer on the club basketball scene and while he remains one of the top scoring threats in the entire state, got a chance to play and develop as a point guard as well. The senior is on the cusp of receiving his first offer, which wouldn’t surprise us if it comes during the season as Roosevelt hopes to march toward the Chiles Center.
