It brought some of the top 64 prospects in the NWO area together to compete against each other in an invite-only showcase. It had over 50 college scouts in attendance and multiple media members. I will put out four articles about this event. Toledo and NWO have a lot of really good guard talent. For my last article for the 2023 Toledo Top 64, I am going to talk about some of the guards that impressed in the event on Sunday.
Murphy is a taller and very lengthy guard who can shoot the lights out. He showed that again on Sunday. He needed little to no space to knock down the three-ball. Even though he needs little to no space to shoot the ball he never forced it. He was good off the dribble and catch-n-shoot. Something that impressed me was his defensive presence. He seems to be getting quicker and better footwork defensively. He was guarding the ball very well and applied felt pressure. His length allows him to take more chances than most and the ability to recover. He has some impressive blocks. He is getting more athletic and will be the senior leader for St. John’s this year.
Washington was doing a lot of the little things, specifically on the defensive end for his team. This was very mature to see from an underclassman to do this. He is a very athletic wing who got a ton of rebounds. He was attacking the glass very hard for rebounds. He had a stifling defense. He took the challenge of guarding some of the best prospects in the NWO area and held his own. He brought a ton of energy to his team and set the tone on the defensive end. Washington impressed me with his energy, communication, and defense attention.

Simpson was one of only a few freshmen in the event on Sunday and didn’t show it. He was cool calm and confident. He was the running point guard for his team and knew how to control the pace and speed of the game. He knew when to get out in transition and when to slow it down. He was really good at coming off ball screens and making decisions. He showed a great understanding of what to do once the defenders were behind him or on his hip. He has a really good touch in the lane and around the rim. He has good strength and absorbs contact well, along with dictating it. Simpson proved he is going to be a player.
Isaiah Beauchamp
Isaiah Beauchamp
Beauchamp is a very quick and fast guard who knows what foot of the defender to attack. He had defenders one skates a lot. He was scoring with good but simple moves. He was not over-dribbling or shooting the ball. Played the game the right way and proved to scouts and me, he can be a true point guard. I liked what I saw from Beauchamp and proved he is more than just an ISO player.
Deyontae Spearman

Spearman was one of the smallest players in the event but made a huge impact. His defensive energy and intensity were through the roof. He played his tail off all day. He was picking up everyone full court and was in their shorts. He caused a lot of pokeaways and turnovers. If you had the slightest moment of laziness with the ball, he made you pay for it. He showed good decisions when he had the ball in his hands but you could see he was saving his energy for the defensive end. He really impressed me. One of, if not, the top defenders at the event Sunday.
