In late April, Cal-Poly was the first to pull the trigger on the 6-foot-7 combo forward.
“Hearing that first phone call, saying ‘We’re giving you an offer was truly amazing,” Mitchell told Prep Hoops Wisconsin. “Working in the gym every day, it’s amazing how much goes into that every day.
“They said they wanted to be first, because they’ve watched me over the years and seen how I developed and gotten better on a daily basis. That was really important to me.
“Cal Poly is a good school under consideration.”
As a sophomore, Mitchell posted 22 points eight rebounds, and four assists per game. The state’s third-ranked junior is also garnering high major interest from Iowa State, Marquette, and Wisconsin heading into the 2023-24 season.
Iowa State: “Me and coach Blount (J.R. Blount) talk a lot. He said we were gonna set up a visit some time and watch a football game.”
Marquette: “We’re gonna plan on going on an unofficial visit during the fall. That’s a really good school. I like how they run their program, how they focus on building relationships. They focus on the players. It’s not just basketball.”
Wisconsin: “I’m going on an unofficial visit on the 2nd for a football game. I’ve been talking with coach Gard (Greg Gard). They said they’ve really never seen a player like me. They would like to say Nigel Hayes, but I’m so unique, able to play 1-through-4. He said he’s really interested in how I can stretch the floor and guard 1-through-5.”
Northern Iowa has also expressed interest in Mitchell as of late.
In no rush to make a decision, Mitchell is looking for a basketball program that benefits him on and off the floor.
“I’d say, not just my development as a person, but as a player,” he said. “Building a relationship with the school and having a family on the court with people that I trust. A family and a program, that’s the most ideal spot for me. Doesn’t matter where it is as long as they help me become a better player and a better person.”
