In today’s high school landscape, point guards at the highest level are expected to carry out ball-handling duties while also adopting a wide range of scoring abilities to their arsenal. When we talk about a floor general, we talk about a guy who can do both. Those guys are hard to find. But the Tar Heel state is full of them. Let’s take a look at some of the most underrated floor generals the c/o ’24 has to offer.
Coming off an NCISSA 3-A state championship with Greensboro Day, Will Otto is one of the most complete guards I’ve seen play all season. At 6’3”, 170 lbs, he uses his frame to his advantage in all aspects of his game. Especially when driving in the lane. Does a great job of using his body to draw contact at the rim. Can finish tough plays. Excellent free-throw shooter. Has a sweet mid-range game. Knows where his spots are and how to get to them. Plays great off the ball. Excellent from behind the arc. From a true 1 standpoint, has patience for plays to develop. Knows when to penetrate the lane and when to kick it out. Lock-down defender on the opposing team’s guards. Excited to see this guy run it back with the Bengals one more year in pursuit of a second championship.
Jordan Durham Jordan Durham 6’3″ | CG The Burlington School | 2024 State NC is the type of guy who gets after it every possession. On the offensive end of the floor, he can really shoot it from three. Does not hesitate to pull up from anywhere within his range. Plays great off ball screens. Makes highly contested, big-time shots when it matters most. Really strong kid. Fearless when in pursuit of the rim. Gets to the line a ton and is consistent. Excellent in a pick and roll. On defense, his size allows him to guard 1-4. Has an active presence in the passing lane. Gets a ton of steals that account for easy fast break buckets. Aggressive rebounder for a guard. With a highly anticipated junior year that eventually came up short in the playoffs, expect Durham to get this Burlington School squad right back in the thick of it.
Despite being a smaller guard, Jayde Braswell Jayde Braswell 6’0″ | PG Hillside | 2024 State NC is the type of guy you want bringing it up for your squad. He’s unselfish with the rock and can really score when need be. His speed is what sets him apart. Has a lethal first step, and gets to the rim with ease from anywhere on the floor. Can jump. Does a nice job of using his body to draw fouls. One of the scrappiest defenders I have seen this year. Channels his aggression on defense into getting out in transition and making plays off turnovers. Simply put, Jayde Braswell Jayde Braswell 6’0″ | PG Hillside | 2024 State NC is a tough, old-school kind of guard who will give you everything he’s got on both ends of the floor.
DJ Boyce DJ Boyce 6’3″ | CG United Faith Christian | 2024 State NC is a sharpshooter. There is no other way to put it. He has endless range, is great off the ball, and has a great understanding of how to put himself in positions to score. He has a real mature style of play about his game. Boyce can exploit closeouts with a quick first step and knows how to get to the rim and make big plays. Has a knack for getting his teammates involved, too. Finds open shooters in the corner and is unselfish about who gets looks. DJ Boyce DJ Boyce 6’3″ | CG United Faith Christian | 2024 State NC just wants to win, and the nature of his game reflects that narrative.
Elliot’s presence defensive is what makes him the player he is. He’s a competitor. Plays great man defense. Is effective in a zone. Jumps with bigs 6 inches taller without hesitation. Despite a smaller build, he is a really efficient defender. He contests shots, boxes out hard, and can grab 50/50 balls that bounce off the glass. On offense, he is an excellent distributor. Has a solid mid-range game that has consistently improved over time. This is a guy who puts the team first and does whatever it takes to come out on top.
