Drake Powell
About Drake
Expert Analysis
Jay Anderson | Prep Hoops Scout
Powell is probably the most complete combo guard prospect in the class as he’s the No. 1 combo guard in the final rankings. He’ll defend the opposing team’s best player while maintaining his energy and consistency on offense just the same. He’ll be a scary sight to behold in Chapel Hill next fall.

The UNC signee will look to lead his team to a state championship in his final year of being in a Northwood uniform. Despite being such a highly ranked player, you have to love the fact that he looks to make the correct play for his team at all times.

Powell still managed to post 24 points and had a number of steals and blocks to bring the energy for his squad. He turned things on late to boost his point total but the deficit still was too wide for him to close by himself. He held his own against a number of other DI prospects who were able to find their runs offensively in victory. He’s impressive in his ability to create with and without the ball in his hands offensively and can defend anywhere on the floor.

Powell was impressive at the guard role as he showcased his ability to defend a multitude of positions in Northwood High’s 1-1 outing. He finished with 21.0 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 2.0 APG, 1.0 SPG and 1.0 BPG on 45.8 percent shooting from the floor and 30.8 percent shooting from deep. He’s been the Chargers’ biggest asset as a defender and playmaker but as he grows into his role as volume shooter, look for his overall production to increase as it has. He’s got a bright future ahead of him as a UNC Tar Heels’ commit.

Powell is widely considered to be one of the best Two-Way Prospects in the Country. But, due to injury, Drake was forced into a slightly different role both last week at the Nike Peach Jam and this weekend at the Phenom Hardwood Classic. Although it’s not his most effective position, Drake’s physicality, Basketball IQ, and ball-handling skills all allow him to be a more than capable on-ball playmaker. He finished with 7 Assists, most of which came in a late second half run, in Team CP3’s loss to BSA Supreme.

continues to impress in a big way this week in front of all kinds of eyeballs, looking to be the next big two-way wing at UNC. His defense is probably one of the best in the entire country, using his athleticism and instincts to jump into gaps, wreak havoc in passing lanes, and strip ball handlers. He’s shooting the ball at a high clip too so far, knocking down multiple threes a game and getting to pull-ups as well. Of course, his slashing and leaping ability is still there in full force, with a posterizing dunk on Tuesday being the highlight of the week. Playing like he has all week bodes very well for his college and potential professional career.

to Team CP3, but he still remains a top name in their rotation, averaging 11.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 2.6 apg on 40.5 percent shooting from the field. He’ll need to improve on his perimeter shooting going forward.
