Continue ReadingThe CBG Grassroots Tip-Off took place on Saturday at RockIt Sports in Henrico, VA, and it was one of the top events on the east coast with some of the best teams from the DMV, VA and NC in attendance. There were over 30 teams ranging from 17U-15U, with some of the top teams in the area taking place.
We will be spending the next week breaking down the many standouts we saw at the event. If you want to watch the replay, you can see it on the CBG Live Network.
Here’s a look at part two of the many 16U standouts from the DMV teams in the event.
William Harper William Harper 6'4" | PG Gonzaga | 2025 State MD | 6’4” CG | DC Premier
The Gonzaga combo guard had himself quite the showing for a deep Premier team that went 2-0 on the day, and he’s set to have a breakout summer on UAA this year. He’s a dual threat guard who can both set up his teammates off the bounce and create his own shot, he can score the ball from multiple levels and hit contested shots and he is the guy they turn to when they need someone to get a bucket. Throw in the fact that he’s a solid defender both on the ball and in help side, and it’s only a matter of time before his recruitment takes off.
Jayson Peterson Jayson Peterson 6'8" | C Bullis | 2025 State MD | 6’7” F | DC Premier
The Bullis forward showed flashes of his potential as a sophomore, but if he plays the way he did Saturday on the circuit this year he’ll make a big name for himself. At 6’7” with long arms and likely still growing he has a great frame to play both on the perimeter and in the paint, he attacks the rim aggressively and is a fearless finisher above the rim and he can step out on the perimeter where he can make shots too. He’s a smart player who understands team concepts on both ends of the floor and he’s efficiently productive in a number of different ways.
Omari Witherspoon Omari Witherspoon 6'4" | CG St. John's | 2025 State MD | 6’4” PG | DC Premier
The backcourt of Harper and Witherspoon is going to be a handful for many teams on UAA, as they both are dynamic and big guards who can make plays for themselves and others. Witherspoon was great in transition as he made good reads and pushed the tempo, he showed the ability to get to the rim and use his size to finish through traffic and he made shots off the bounce in the midrange well. He worked the pick-and-roll well in the half court and he showed good awareness on the defensive end too.
Emmanuel Kanga | 6’9” PF/C | DC Premier
Kanga is one of the prospects that I think will blow up this summer on this talented Premier team, and if he plays the way he did Saturday coaches are going to see the major upside with him moving forward. The 6’9” big man out of Archbishop Carrol has a great frame with good strength and the ability to clear out space, he runs the floor well and is an explosive finisher out in transition and he moves well defensively to switch and guard. He plays with a good motor and hits the glass on both ends, and he has a lot of room to get better moving forward.
Shane Pendergrass Shane Pendergrass 6'8" | PF Mt. Zion | 2026 State MD | 6’8” PF | DC Premier
Pendergrass is another versatile forward for this team that is a great glue guy because of his ability to do a little bit of everything on the floor. At 6’8” he has length and athleticism to guard multiple positions and challenge shots both in the paint and on the perimeter, he can step out and knock down shots from deep but also has soft touch around the rim with both hands and he has a knack for being around the ball and in the right place at the right time. He has a good feel for the game and doesn’t need the ball in his hands very much to be effective.
