City Section used to dominate the high school basketball landscape back in the day and while more emphasis has been placed on Southern Section in recent years, there is still talent in City Section to watch. Here’s a look at some of the City Section point guards to keep an eye on as the playoffs get underway this week.
1. A.J. Robinson – Crenshaw 2023
Robinson has consistently been one of the top point guards in City Section and big reason why Crenshaw has had a strong season. He is impressive with the ball in his hands and is able to dribble against defensive pressure. Solid in either the halfcourt or on the break. He knows when to look for his shot and when to find the open teammate. Attacks downhill and is a strong finisher through contact at the basket. Able to draw fouls and get to the free-throw line. Consistent shooter from three-point range.
2. E.J. Andrews – Narbonne 2025
Andrews is part of the engine that makes Narbonne run. He is a solid point guard and he runs the offense efficiently. Able to dribble under defensive pressure. Can attack off the dribble consistently and gets into the lane where he can finish well. Able to kick the ball out to open teammates when the defense collapses on his drives. Hits defenders with a little floater. He’s comfortable being able to create his own shot and can hit defenses with step-back jumpers.

– Fairfax 2024
Mack is a solid scoring point guard. He can flat out score, he is comfortable attacking off the dribble and can get all the way to the basket or he can pull-up and shoot the midrange jumper. Good body control, able to absorb contact at the basket and still be able to finish. Able to get to the free-throw line. Can knock down the three-point shot with consistency. Does a good job finding the seams in the defense and making the right play whether it’s looking for his shot or making the pass.
4. Jacob LaCount – King/Drew 2023
LaCount has improved throughout the season as a point guard. He is trusted with the ball in his hands and can dribble against defensive pressure. He has also improved his shooting and can consistently knock down the midrange and the three-point jumpers. Can shoot the little floater in the lane as well. Pushes the pace in transition. What really stands out though is his defensive ability. He reads the passing lanes and uses his quick hands to knock balls free and force turnovers.
5. Elijah Bell – South East 2024
Bell is another good scoring point guard. He can handle the ball well and run the offense keeping the ball moving, but he has a knack for putting the ball in the basket. Good catch and shoot player from three-point range. Able to face up as well and shoot the midrange jumper. Comfortable attacking off the dribble and getting into the lane where he can finish strong; able to draw contact and get himself to the free-throw line.
