Regional tournaments are underway and there are hundreds of Seniors who already played their final game of high school basketball. Let’s take a look at the top ten players in our final Class of 2023 Rankings. Photo courtesy of Dr. Mike Huang of Kentucky Sports Radio.
Reed has been either number 1 or number 2 in these rankings since they were first posted years ago. He finishes as the top player in the class and the presumptive favorite to win Mr Basketball. Sheppard effects the game on both ends at a high level and is in the top 25-40 in America in the 2023 class regardless of which rankings you look at.
Moore has had a ridiculous career at Owen County and ended the regular season as the third leading scorer and 20th in rebounding. He’s shot 64% from the field and 84% from the free throw line for the season and has to be the most valuable player to his team in the state.
Highlights
The state’s top scorer for two years in a row, Meyer ended his career as the leading scorer in 9th region history. Jacob is also the state’s highest ranked unsigned Senior and will likely score a lot of points in college as well.
Highlights
The 11th region Co-Player of the Year, Potter went from an unknown to a top 3-5 talent over the course of the last two years. Reece could see a lot of playing time at Miami (Ohio) next season but his immediate focus is getting Lexington Catholic back to Rupp Arena in his final season.
Malonga’s development has been ridiculous over the last 3 years. He still has some occasional plays where he looks awkward or uncoordinated but don’t be surprised if Cyr ends up a big time Center in the near future. He’s long and athletic and plays with a bit of a mean streak.
The only other un-committed 2023 in the top 10, Gabe re-enters the rankings after his short trip to prep school out west moved him out of the last rankings. Sisk is a smooth scorer with a high skill level. He has stretches of looking like a future high major impact player and could get Ballard on a deep run through Rupp.
The 2022 State Tournament MVP has had another really good season for GRC and will likely get on the court at Morehead a lot next season. Jerone is a tough lefty guard who can score the ball all over and is at his best when he’s got the ball in his hands and attacks the rim.
Ipsaro had to shoulder more of an offensive burden for Covington Catholic this season as his supporting cast was way down from what he had in his last couple of seasons. Evan was Co-regional player of the year and the Colonels are probably the team to beat in the 9th region.
Dynes has come lightyears in the last 12-18 months and his best basketball is all still ahead of him. Gabe is only going to get better when he gets to Youngstown state and he already led the entire state in field goal percentage in his Senior season. Long term, Dynes may have the most potential in the class thanks to his size.
McCrear missed most of his Senior season with a knee injury but returned at the perfect time as Woodford pushes for an 8th region title. Of all the kids on the list, I still believe that John has the best chance of being a future pro if he gets it all figured out as he has insane length and athleticism. Look for him to be an impact player at Murray if he shows up and puts the work in.
