Continue ReadingAfter emerging as a strong role player down the stretch last year for the 1A champion Lynx, Pflughaupt has had a chance to step into a starring role this season and hasn’t disappointed. In their win over Beckman, he made his presence known on both ends of the floor, finishing with 11 points (4-7 FG, 2-5 3P), 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, and an assist. He’s a long, lanky combo forward who can score inside and out, and his ability to shoot it really helps space the floor for a Lynx team that features a number of quality guards who can break down a defense and get to the bucket with the additional spacing provided. He’s a versatile defender who rotates well and has great timing as a shot blocker.

A high IQ guard with a great feel for the game, Bean finds ways to impact the game even when he isn’t scoring. He gets others involved at a high clip, is a strong on-ball defender, and a very willing rebounder. His jumper wasn’t falling in Xavier’s win over Williamsburg, shooting just 1-5 from the arc, but he still finished with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. One thing that I’ve always loved about Bean is that he’s willing to take smaller defenders down onto the block and facilitate the offense through there, both as a scorer and a passer. He has the footwork and touch of an experienced post player, and with his court vision and passing instincts, he can be a real weapon when he’s operating from that part of the court.

The future Iowa football player had an up-and-down game in the Raiders’ season opening loss to Xavier, finishing with 8 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal, but he showed a lot of the ability that make him a strong basketball prospect if he weren’t such a strong football prospect. He’s a tremendous athlete who explodes to the rim for finishes, and he has really improved his ball-handling and playmaking over the last year, turning himself into a reliable facilitator for the Raiders offense.
Costello is a pure scorer through and through, but what really stood out in the Warriors’ loss to Northwest was his improved playmaking. A long, lanky, and athletic wing, he dished out a team-high 4 assists, showing that he can put the ball on the floor and get into the teeth of the defense, get them to collapse, and find an open teammate. Adding that playmaking to his game, when coupled with his ability to get his own shot from all three levels, will only continue to elevate his stock.
