Ellensburg has the size. Mark Morris and Grandview have the guards. They all have some of the most talented players in 2A. This is only three teams, there are plenty more who have talent in duos, trios and across the board. Each of the teams mentioned have played four games, which has given them a larger sample size than most.
He is off to a scorching start in his first 4 games, topping the 30-point mark 3 times and averaging 29. 8 points per game through the first four. He is getting those points in a variety of ways. He leads the CWAC 2A conference in free throws attempted and made, 26-35 at 74%. He has also made 9 3’s and leads the league in field goals made. It is safe to say, he’s scoring from all levels. With his size, he has the ability and skills to do so. He has helped Ellensburg get off to a 3-1 start to the season, losing only their opener to Hermiston.
Highlights
He is the other half of the duo of versatility in Ellensburg. He is averaging 19 points a game through the first four. I don’t have rebounding stats, but I believe he had 17 rebounds in the opener. It is safe to assume that he is averaging a double double or at least close to that. His skill level is one that along with Fenz, is a nightmare match-up. These two are a big part of why I believe Ellensburg can make a deep post-season run. I am interested in seeing how the match-ups go with some of the teams in their own league first. In particular, Grandview who has a trio of guards that are off to a great start. Lino Armandarez, and Julian Garza Julian Garza 5’11” Grandview | 2023 WA have lead the way thus far averaging 18.5 and 14.3 points a game in a 4-0 start. Levi Dorsett Levi Dorsett 6’0″ | CG Grandview | 2024 State WA was an all league pick last year. In a lot of ways these two teams are polar opposites, Ellensburg with size and Grandview with quickness but not much size.
Highlights
Mark Morris has a trio of guards and I have written about all three more than once. It has been just two thus far, playing without Deacon Dietz Deacon Dietz 6’3″ | SG Mark Morris | 2023 State WA . So far Parlin is off to a monster start, averaging 28.5 a game in the Monarch’s 3-1 start to the season. He is one of the top guards in 2A and I could have said that last year too. He can score it with the best of them. With Braydon Olson Braydon Olson 6’2″ | CG Mark Morris | 2024 State WA and a healthy Dietz, Mark Morris will be a tough match-up on the perimeter all season long.
He is getting 19 points a game through the first four. He has been consistently around 20 in each game, and led them with 23 in a tough win over a good Ridgefield team. He is a threat from anywhere and can get hot in a hurry. You have to respect his three point shooting, but he can get buckets in the mid-range game at an elite level as well as getting himself all the way to the basket. It is no secret that Mark Morris is talented. The one thing they don’t have a lot of is size and much like Grandview, it will be interesting to see how they match up with some of the bigger teams like Ellensburg. If they should happen to meet, it won’t be until regionals or state. I believe all three are state tournament teams when it’s all said and done.
