Continue ReadingWith a full season of high school hoops and a handful of spring club events under our belt, the Prep Hoops SoCal Staff was able to get a good grip on the class of 2023, which led to our latest update to the rising senior rankings. In this piece we breakdown what the power forward position looks like in this class.
Devin Williams Devin Williams 6'10" | PF Corona Centennial | 2023 State #86 Nation CA-S , Corona Centennial, No. 1 PF/No. 2 overall – We can go on and on about Williams’ upside, but to keep it short, the 6-foot-10 forward has made immense strides on the most important side of the floor: defense. Williams’ ability to change shots around the rim, time and block shots, and rebound and start the break were integral parts of the Huskies’ runs to CIF Southern Section and State Open Division titles. Add in the fact that Williams is an inside-out scoring threat and you have the best big man prospect in the class.
Zack Davidson Zack Davidson 6'8" | PF Mater Dei | 2023 State CA-S , Mater Dei, No. 2 PF/No. 9 overall – Davidson is one of the more skilled offensive big men in the region. His inside-out scoring skill-set is highlighted by his ability to hit catch-and-shoot three’s, put it on the floor and attack the basket, and score on pull-ups at the mid-range level. I think the part of Davidson’s game that goes under-appreciated is his passing IQ and willingness to look for teammates.
Xavier Edmonds Xavier Edmonds 6'8" | PF Bishop Montgomery | 2023 State #245 Nation CA-S , Bishop Montgomery, No. 3 PF/ No. 14 overall – Edmonds has such impressive skill on the block and, at his size with his footwork and touch, it makes him a really tough cover for opposing high school bigs. The thing we like most about Edmonds is he knows who he is and plays to his strengths. At 6-feet-8 with a big body and good feel with his back to the basket, the 2023 forward does a nice job of sealing deep post position and scoring on high percentage looks.
Jimmy Oladokun Jimmy Oladokun 6'8" | PF Sierra Canyon | 2023 State CA-S , Damien, No. 4 PF/No. 16 overall – If there’s one thing you can always trust you’ll get from Oladokun it’s him playing with a high motor and creating mismatches because of his size and skill-set. The 6-foot-8 forward can play down low or in face-up situations where he can hit jumpers off of jab steps or take a slower defender off the dribble and get to the basket where he can finish above or through contact.
Aaron McBride Aaron McBride 6'7" | PF Corona Centennial | 2023 State CA-S , Corona Centennial, No. 5 PF/No. 17 overall – While McBride’s game isn’t the prettiest or most flashy on this list, his two-way impact was so important for Centennial this past season. The 6-foot-6 forward did all the dirty work to help the Huskies win Southern Section and State Open titles from offensive and defensive rebounding to guarding multiple positions and finishing above the rim on the break. McBride is one of those players who doesn’t say a whole lot on the floor, but instead allows his game to speak for him.
