This is the first of several Prep Hoops events in the Midwest as we converge onto the Grit Region Finals in Indianapolis at the end of the month. There were a ton of very intriguing games over the weekend, and now, let’s take a look at some of the 2022 Standout Guards from the state of Indiana.
Reggie Bass Reggie Bass 6'4" | SG Arsenal Tech | 2022 State #175 Nation IN – 2022 SG – Arsenal Tech (Team Teague 2022)
Bass is a bigger combo guard, and the southpaw really knows how to play make. He is silky smooth with the ball in his hands, and he always takes it strong to the hole. However, this can get him into trouble as he can get out of control and force himself into turnovers or bad decisions with the basketball. Bass is a great passer and can hit shots from anywhere on the court, and if he can manage to play within himself, he will do very well at Illinois.
Ryan Conwell Ryan Conwell 6'2" | SG Pike | 2022 State #155 Nation IN – 2022 PG – Pike (EG10 2022)
Conwell is a shifty guard who isn’t the biggest, but he can also match up well with most other guards in the area. He is an outstanding player on the offensive end of the floor as he can score in many different ways. He is a great three-point shooter, and he loves to attack downhill and is silky smooth finishing in the lane. He also will never hesitate to pull up for a shot. On the defensive end, Conwell has pretty active hands which led to a couple of steals in this one. He is going to be a very good player for whichever mid-major program he ends up with.
Marco Fitch Marco Fitch 6'0" | PG Bloomington North | 2022 State IN – 2022 PG – Bloomington North (IE Blaze Select 2022)
Fitch is a small, shifty guard who does so much on the offensive end of the floor. He is a pass-first point guard who is unselfish and always looking to get his teammates involved. He is a great ball-handler, and he seems to always know what to do with the basketball. Scoring the ball, he showed off a nice reverse lay-in and a smooth step-back jumper in the lane. He knows how to create shots for both himself and his teammates, and he is going to be in store for a big senior season for Bloomington North. There is no question in my mind that this kid is an extremely underrated point guard who will be playing college basketball following his senior season.
Omarion Hatch Omarion Hatch 5'8" | PG Michigan City | 2022 IN – 2022 PG – Michigan City (94 Feet Elite 2022)
Hatch is a very small guard who was incredibly aggressive over the weekend. He is a smooth ball handler with a great crossover and quick first step. Hatch also showed some good touch around the rim and hit a nice little mid-range pull-up. There were times when his decision-making seemed rough, and he tried to fit in some passes that weren’t quite there. However, Hatch can make plays from all over, and he hustles for every second that he is on the floor. He may be overlooked because of his size, but he will always play hard, and he may be worth a flier for a Division 3 coach.
Nathan Hoffman – 2022 SG – Bloomington North (IE Blaze Select 2022)
Hoffman is a smaller 2 guard who can really do a lot well. He is an unselfish player who does have the ability to get to the hole. He also showed multiple times that he can finish through contact. Hoffman is a fighter on both ends of the floor, and he isn’t afraid to go in amongst the trees to grab a rebound. He also is a great three-point shooter. Hoffman has looked good now the last two times that I have seen him, and he should be a player for Division 3 programs to take a look at.
Darren Roach – 2022 SG – Crown Point (94 Feet Elite 2022)
Roach is a thinner shooting guard who spends most of his time on the floor on the outside of the three-point arc. He is never going to hesitate to shoot the ball, and although he has a smooth stroke, his shots just weren’t falling in this one. Roach also showed his ability to attack the rim when the lane opened up. He can go strong to the hole and finish all around the rim. Roach has played pretty well over the course of the summer, and he looked good again this past weekend.
Devarius Stewart – 2022 PG – Lighthouse Prep (94 Feet Elite 2022)
Stewart is a small guard who uses his quickness to get to the rim. He is smooth with the ball in his hands, and he can finish both through and around contact on the inside. Stewart didn’t show much of a jump shot in this one as all of his buckets came at the rim. On the defensive end, Stewart showed active hands and came up with several deflections and steals to disrupt their opponents.
Jordan Turner Jordan Turner 6'3" | PG Cardinal Ritter | 2022 State IN – 2022 SG – Cardinal Ritter (EG10 2022)
Turner is a bigger guard who is very physical on both ends of the floor. He is the type of player who is never going to shy away from contact, especially when taking it to the rim. Turner had a couple of nice jumpers in this one, but the thing that impressed me the most was his creative playmaking ability. He was able to create open shots for both he and his teammates consistently throughout the game. He was unselfish and always looking to get his teammates involved, and he made some passes that I didn’t think he had a chance of completing. Turner looked very good, and he should have some NAIA and Division 3 coaches looking at him before it is all said and done.
Leland Walker Leland Walker 5'11" | PG North Central | 2022 VA -2022 PG – Hargrave Military Academy (Team Teague 2022)
Walker is a smaller guard who is extremely physical and quite possibly the quickest guard that I have seen in a long time. He has an excellent crossover and can beat nearly every single player on any court with his dribble, but Walker can struggle to finish at times around the rim. He has made amazing progress with his outside shot as this is no longer a question mark in his game. Walker also has major ups and showed that with a dunk late in the game. With Walker’s scoring and passing skills, he is a no-doubt mid-major prospect, and he has the potential to put his team in a position to win every night.
