Continue ReadingForwards are a sought after commodity, especially at the high school level. Their size adds a baseline and requisite versatility that may not have been present without such size. Here are some incoming sophomores and freshman who proved they’re not just tall, but have more in their toolbox than expected.
Brady Greene – Rough Riders/Riverdale – 24’
Greene pushed the break every opportunity he got, all while being the tallest player on the team at 6’5. One word that embodies Greene is energy. He fights for rebounds even if it means leaping on second, third, and fourth chance opportunities. He stayed aggressive attacking the rim against a big Collective 15u squad featuring 6’5+ forwards like Cass Henry Cass Henry 6'7" | PF Arapahoe | 2024 State CO , Reid Finch Reid Finch 6'6" | PF Rock Canyon | 2024 State CO , and Tommy Wight. I’ll say it again, Greene will do everything in his power to beat you on the break, where he scored 12 of his 19 total points. On the defensive end, be careful jumping with Greene, as he will hunt down your layup attempts with zero remorse. The swing skill for Greene, like so many bigs is getting his jumper to a knock down level from distance.
Miles Schwartz – Pro Skills/Denver South – 25’
Schwartz is an incoming freshman that is already very tall at 6’5. Against most teams he simply reaches over the competition when going rebounds. He plays to his strengths and focuses on the fundamentals, such as finding a body to box out and staying down on pump fakes. When drives come to the rim, he does a great job keeping his arms high up, deterring a shot attempt.
Owen Wright – Hornets/Pomona – 24’ (pictured above)
Wright is an intriguing 6’5 forward who has a smooth handle and can confidently dunk in transition. Currently, Wright is most comfortable in the open court when he has more space to operate and decide what to do. When the lane crowds around him, he is run off the line easily, which causes him to rush with his decisions. Wright is raw, but has a higher than average potential if he can continue to get stronger and build his patience under duress.
Reid Finch Reid Finch 6'6" | PF Rock Canyon | 2024 State CO – Collective/Rock Canyon – 24’
Finch has great passing vision for his age and size at already 6’4. He is adept at hitting teammates in their pocket with skip passes from either wing location. Finch is a bigger bodied forward who still needs to work on the fundamentals, but it’s clear the raw talent is there. He’s a capable rebounder when he focuses on his awareness, since he can deal with the bigger opposing forwards down low. Finch needs to keep working on the fundamentals such as ballhandling under pressure, free throw consistency, and off-hand touch around the rim.
Owen Alleman – Pro Skills/Denver South – 24’
Alleman is very tall at around 6’7, with a thin but lengthy frame. He is a student of the game, where he makes it a priority to study as much basketball as possible. Alleman showed that he has a dependable free throw form, where becoming a stretch big is certainly in his wheelhouse in the coming year. He displayed soft touch on rebounds, where he always went up with two hands and even tapped the ball out to his team a few times. Alleman is a project, but proved that he will compete for you at all times.
