Continue ReadingPrep Hoops Colorado recently updated its class of 2022 rankings, and this is one of our favorite classes as it is full of gym rats who want to get better, and there will continue to be shifts made to this class.
This is a class that we have seen the most of with tournaments, private workouts, underground runs, and plenty of BallerTV.
Let’s look at some of the top scorers from the class in only their sophomore season.
Tayt Chacon Tayt Chacon 6'4" | PF University | 2022 State CO – University
Chacon had his team playing winning basketball, and University was a team to watch all season long. The 6’5 wing/forward was the second-leading scorer in the entire 2022 class as he put up 20.2 points a game and had a balanced stat line of 4.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists to go along with it. Chacon is a two-way scorer that plays both inside and out, and his work in the passing lanes provided him additional scoring opportunities as he can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim, and he did plenty of that. Chacon scored in double digits in 21 of the 23 games and had an explosion where he put up 40 points in a game while singlehandedly outscoring the opposing team. He shot the ball exceptionally well at 43% from beyond the arc and was a paint beast that hunted out mismatches and capitalized as well. Chacon did not play this summer but going off of last season; it is difficult to see a year where he does not improve in every category and solidify himself as one of the better scorers in the entire class. Expect another huge season from him.
Luke Williams Luke Williams 5'9" | CG Dsst Green Valley | 2022 State CO – Chaparral
Who would’ve guessed that the second-leading scorer on DSST: Green Valley Ranch last season was only a sophomore. Williams is a small guard that played well above his size, and opposing teams had a difficult time trying to slow him down. Williams is a pass-first point guard that sees the floor well and can generate easy scoring opportunities for teammates but also attacks in pick and rolls and excels in isos as well. Williams put up 15.0 points a game and 3.4 assists a game and shows off his multidimensional and explosive offense. Williams gets what he wants at the rim amongst the trees and knows his way around the rim. He showcased that this summer with the Colorado Hawks, where other solid players surrounded him, and he held his own. This season he makes the transfer over to Chaparral and will be filling voids left by two guards that played the right way. He will be asked to score and facilitate on a young team and indeed take on the challenge in a stronger league. Williams is in a great position to prove that no matter the class, he has what it takes to stand out—excited to see what he brings to the Wolverines this season.
Jordan Reed Jordan Reed 6'5" | CG Manual | 2022 State CO – Manual
Reed is already off to a great career. He already is a state championship despite not playing massive minutes on the team as a sophomore but took it all in and knows what it takes to win. Reed had a massive jump in his freshman to sophomore season and had a chance to repeat as state champs if not for the season coming to an abrupt ending with his team still in the Final 4. Reed’s sophomore campaign had him as one of the classes’ top scorers at 14.9 points a game, and he had 5.0 rebounds to go along with it. The 6’2 combo-guard is a smooth lefty that gets to his spots on the floor, spaces the floor with his outside shot, and slashes for easy baskets. He played alongside one of the top scorers in the state, so he found a way to manage and take over at times. With him being the returning leading scorer and captain, it will be up to him to put up some big numbers. Luckily for the ThunderBolts, they have a guard that is willing to take tough shots, play within the flow of the offense, and push the issue at times. This is a big year where Reed has to show that he can lead and dominate—expecting a big year for him.
Tarrance Austin Tarrance Austin 5'10" | PG Pueblo South | 2022 State CO – Pueblo South
Pueblo South indeed had a down season with not many bright spots and quickly want to forget about the season and get back to their winning ways. The Colts were one of the youngest teams in the state, and with that came growing pains. One of those youngsters that did, however, learn a ton in the season and got some momentum under him was their point guard Tarrance Austin Tarrance Austin 5'10" | PG Pueblo South | 2022 State CO . Austin put up 17.2 points a game good for second in the 4A South Central League. Austin also had a balanced stat line of 5.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists a game to show that he was also willing to do the dirty work and get involved in other ways. His team-high 3.7 steals a game was encouraging for him as a willing defender, which showcases a balanced game. This season those impressive numbers will have to translate to wins if he plans on turning things around Pueblo South.
Luke Hutto Luke Hutto 6'3" | SF Montrose | 2022 State CO – Montrose
Montrose had an excellent year as they went 20-5 on the season and flirted with the Top-10 all season long. The Indians played the right way and as a team, and when they needed a bucket, they went to their best player, Luke Hutto Luke Hutto 6'3" | SF Montrose | 2022 State CO , a 6’2 forward that has an inside presence to his game. He put up 14.6 points and 7.2 rebounds a game as only a sophomore and wants more. Hutto has excellent footwork and overpowers smaller defenders and outworks bigger players on the block. Hutto is a glass cleaner that gives his team extra scoring opportunities while reading when double-teams are coming and dishing it out. Hutto was the player opposing teams tried to slow down and could not make it happen as he is an unselfish leader that knows his way around the basket. He is a mobile big that plays above his size, scores in bunches, and has soft touch. Montrose’s offense is centered around him, and he is a patient scorer that I feel will have his team in a position to win plenty of games yet again.
