Chaparral beats Cherry Creek (77-75)
With Chaparral having a tough schedule and a lot of new young players, they have started off the year a little dicey going 4-4. But just by watching this team early season you could tell they were going to improve. This was a good match up for Chaparral to prove they are still a team to be reckoned with.
We all know how Kobe Sanders can take over, but what has impressed me are some of his teammates who have stepped up. Sophomore Jeremiah Coleman takes some of the ball handling pressure off of Kobe which allows him to get open shots without having the ball. Then big men Aaron Jacob and Joel Speckman have been playing very well making for a team that has great height. Aaron is averaging 10.5 points per game and Joel is averaging 9 points per game.
This is not to say that Creek is not good, because they only lost by 2. With the football players back, this team is a legitimate threat to beat anyone. Leading the team is Julian Hammond who is a super athlete averaging 20.6 points per game this year. With a good supporting cast around him this team is definitely one to watch.
Eaglecrest handles Mountain Vista with ease (89-68)
This was a game I expected to be a little closer then it was. Both of these teams play at a high pace which made for an exciting game. The first quarter started off very close but Eaglecrest had a huge second quarter, scoring 28 points. And in the second half they kept that dominance up resulting in a solid win.
Eaglecrest arguably has the most improved player in the state, Zion Ruckard, who has been absolutely killing this year. He is averaging 17.8 points and 5.5 assists per game; he is playing more assertive then ever and looking to get his own buckets. Also last night, Ty Robinson was able to use his athleticism to get a crazy dunk and some contested layups. This team is proving that they are one of the top teams in the state this year, watch out.
With Mountain Vista’s main scorer, Reece Kelly, getting all the defense focused on him it allowed Ben Bowen to step up. Ben is one of the more underrated players in the state, he can take the ball up the court, score inside, hit shots from the outside, and find open teammates with ease. This team may not be the same dominant force as last year but still has good chemistry and talent.
