Prep Hoops Colorado has done our best to get out to as many games as we can and have seen plenty of these players this season. We have already discussed some of the top scorers before the break and also assisters but now we focus on some of the top bigs who have been able to affect the game with their work on the boards. Trevor Baskin, Pomona –13.0 rebounds per game
Baskin is leading the state in scoring at 29 points a game and also is leading 5A in rebounds at 13 a game. The 6-8 wing is doing a bit of everything and has quietly put in his name at Mr. Basketball as well.
Brayden Carter, Mullen – 12.7 rebounds per game
Carter has been a pleasant surprise for Mullen as he has out his name in as one of the most improved players in the state to begin the season. He is putting up some big scoring games but where he has really grown the most is down low and on those boards. He is a rebounding machine that is averaging a league-high 12.7 rebounds a game and will try and convert those big numbers into wins in this new year.
Isaiah Thompson, Fountain Fort-Carson – 12.7 rebounds per game
Fountain has been a team that is known to bring it in every single game as they have one of the state’s elite scorers but one of their biggest stock boosters to begin the season is junior big man Thompson who is putting up a whopping 12.7 rebounds a game. He is also adding some relief to Keyshawn Maltbia offensively and is a player to watch.
Luke O’Brien, Columbine – 11.3 rebounds per game
There is no surprise that O’Brien is on here as he has easily been a top-3 player in the state to begin the season. He is in the top-3 in the state in scoring at 28.2 points per game and also has led Columbine to undefeated record begin the season while also being a double-double monster on the boards at 11.3 rebounds a game as well.
Reece Kelly, Mountain Vista – 9.0 rebounds per game
Mountain Vista is a very balanced team that has a bit of everything going for them and my second pick for surprise player of the year is Kelly who at 6’2 is putting together a sensational start of the season. He is up to 20 points a game and he is also able to secure the board and go as well. Mountain Vista will ride their senior guard and if he is able to put up close to double-digit rebounds a game to go along with being a lethal scorer as well – watch out.
