Prep Hoops Colorado has done our best to get out to as many games as we can and have seen plenty of these players this season. We have already discussed some of the top scorers before the break but now we focus on some of the top assist-men in the state. Tommy Apodaca – Lutheran
Apodaca had a very impressive offseason as he jumped onto our radar and did not look back. All he had to do was bring that same intensity into the season and in a very important junior season, he is shining. He is a two-way player that pushes the opposing team to the brink. He also understands how to control the pace and when you have one of the best players in the state and also getting some national exposure it is easy to see you assists rack up. In four games he is at a whopping 9.2 assists a game to lead all of 3A and he can also score as well. This is a player you build around.
Landon Wallace – Conifer
When you talk about the state’s best passers look no further than the state’s leading assist-man. He was not only the state’s leading assister last year but also was amongst the top in the nation and carried that into this season as a facilitator that can also score as well which makes him even more difficult to defend. He is averaging 10.6 assists a game which is even more impressive when factoring in the players that he has around him. He makes them better and puts them in easier positions to score. The Lobos ride their senior point guard and players run harder understanding that he is going to find them. He is a player that I truly enjoy watching and is a player that you have to see once or twice before the season is up. He is in the 4A/3A Colorado 8 league but we put him here.
Sam Howery – St. Mary’s
Howery is only a sophomore but when it is all said and done will put together an incredible high school career. He can score the ball, shoot the ball and now he is showing that he is one of the most unselfish players that just want to go out there and win the game. He is the leading scorer at 20 points a game so its even more impressive that he is putting up 8.6 assists a game as well. He has good players around him and still gets after it for himself. I like what I have seen from Howery and he is a player that you HAVE to watch over the next two seasons.
Caleb Stockton – Colorado Springs Christian
Caleb Stockman is at 6.8 assists a game which is also impressive because he is the teams leading scorer as well. He is putting up 19.8 points a game and his coach is making sure to put the ball in his hands as he is the team’s best playmaker. He is showing off versatility as a guard that brings the ball up but also can play off of the ball as well and when he is not scoring he is getting his teammates involved.
Alex Barron — Cedaredge
Cedaredge is off to a rocky start of the season as they currently sit at 2-4 on the season and have a few players that have been able to get going. While their point guard is not much of a big scorer one player that has been able to stand out is Alex Barron. Barron is a guard that takes chances, pushes the pace and is not afraid to try and make things happen. He gets others involved and is aggressive offensively which can go either way. His 5.5 assists a game is a bright spot over there for sure.
