We have gone through the big men, guards, new names and stock boosters both in underclassmen and also the older group but here we focus on the MVP’s for the day, the day’s biggest standouts, here is our next wave.
Taeshaud Jackson – Dakota Ridge – 2021
Jackson not only has the size but the skill to be one of the most versatile wings in the entire state and at the expo he was able to illustrate just what type of player he was. He was on unarguably the best team at the expo as they essentially ran the court for the entire day and while Jackson is typically scoring and showing of his strength and size down low he was able to display that he could run the show as a lead guard as well. He was handling the ball, setting up his teammate for countless alley-oop dunks, getting out on the fast break and finding the open man and occasionally going up for dunks of his own. I was upset to not see him get the opportunity to go up with some of the other top wings/forwards in the event in a close fought battle but it was great to see that he is working on expanding his game and still providing rebounding and interior scoring with also being able to be the guard as well. Not a bad showing for him.
Trevor Baskin – Pomona – 2020
Baskin was one of the highest ranked players at the event and he showcased it. What it seems is he added to his game since the last time that I see his was athleticism. Baskins went from being an all-around big man that could score out of the post and also pass to now running the fast break and wind milling. He was taking over in the games and keeping his team in it each time out as he had multiple dunks. Baskins is one of the most complete players in the state and is a walking double-double. He is an exciting player to watch that is poised for a big year.
Destin Barker – Saint Amant (Louisiana)
Barker made the trek from Louisiana and it was surely a business trip for the big man. He came to the event and exceeded all expectations that we had for him in the first game as we were already shocked going into the event after the first game. After that, we moved him around as we wanted him to go up against some of the state’s top players, he held his own and then some. He was one of the better two-way players at the event as he challenged every single player at the rim, he had multiple blocks, he did allow guards to come into the paint uncontested and he was also able to switch onto smaller guards and held his own even coming up with a few steals. Barker also showed off his offense as he got on the rim. He had a couple of dunks and finished well around the rim as a physically gifted athlete. Not only a good day for the Louisiana standout but a great one.
Jarmell Johnson – George Washington – 2021
If anybody had themselves a coming out party, it was Johnson. Johnson has been one of the under the radar standouts of the entire summer and he brought that into the event and had one of the most electrifying days of any player on the day. He is a creative finisher that plays above the rim as he had multiple windmills as well as a few alley-oop finishes. He also showed off deep range as he hit 3-pointers as one of the better shooters of the event as well. His team won every game on the day and it was no secret who stole the day on his team as whenever he played there were coaches that were following. I am anxious to see how that translates to the regular season if he continues on this kind of pace that George Washington team can be the dark horse team to win it all. Amazing day for Jarmell as a top-three player on the day without a doubt.
