First off, it was an event that had plenty of returning faces but what really stood out was the new faces that made stood out from not only Colorado but other states as well. In the article we take a look at some of the guards that stood out from the 2020 class this past weekend as it was one of the better positions there were.
Luis Miera – Bear Creek – 2020
Miera came in and took over from the opening game. He is capable of making electrifying plays and he had a few of them especially with his crossover and finishes at the rim. Miera was one of the toughest guards to defend at the event as he had a few different acrobatic finishes that caught my attention and a few of the schools around me. He controls the pace, he is quick with the ball and makes good decisions. One thing I really enjoyed is how he stood out as a leader. He is one of the few players out there talking and guiding his players the entire time and that is the recipe for success, especially at a showcase. Excited to see how Miera will do at Bear Creek this upcoming season as a standout transfer.
Landon Wallace – Conifer – 2020
Heading into the event we all understood that Wallace could score, but, what he did that really surprised me was attack. Wallace was not only passing the ball but was finding his own shot which makes him that much more difficult to guard. He came off of screens and pulled up for shots, he went to finish on fast breaks and he was also moving without the ball to find his own which was a new revelation into his game. Of course, he found the open man but Wallace as a score first point guard was also fun to watch and why he made the list as one of the top guards at the event. Hopefully he can keep that up heading into his senior season.
Cam Le Van – Legend – 2020
Le Van got good news heading into the day as he got an offer from a college. He then proceeded to be one of the better ball handlers on the day and his usual self. While he did not score as he typically does he was most definitely one of the better passers and floor generals who the team rallied behind. He is a wiry point guard that can create for his own or set up his teammates. When open he can knock down his shots consistently and also is difficult to stay in front of. Le Van showed off his IQ at the event and we got to see exactly why he is getting attention to play at the next level.
Caden Gigstad – Ralston Valley – 2020
Gigstad was one of the stock boosters on the day that really caught my eye as he was one of the better two-way players at the event. He brought it on both ends and his defense turned into instant offense as his perimeter presence was a bit too much for most of the guards he defended on the day. Gigstad is an offensive weapon that stays on the attack, he is a downhill runner who keeps his head on the swivel and he is not afraid to force the issue. He can score in a plethora of ways, when he was not getting what he wanted at the rim he made sure to stop and pop for a shot. I liked what I seen from him.
Taylor Harris – Pueblo West –2020
Harris is the true definition of a game changer. As soon as he gets into the game there are going to be winning plays made and it is because he is a 100% effort player. Even his mistakes are things you can live with because he plays with joy and he is doing it at full speed. In the expo he was able to put it altogether. He scored, defended, shot the ball well and also displayed his great ball handling skills. There was a run at the end of the event where he went for six straight points while also getting a steal and deflecting another to an open player on his team for a fast break basket. He creates havoc on both ends of the floor which makes it easier for others on his team. Harris is a player that schools should be looking at as he can instantly make any program better because he is going to give it his all, make the right plays and his play is contagious.
