Continue ReadingIt has been a bit of a touch-and-go winter for Ben Hageman, but that hasn’t stopped the Windsor sophomore from displaying his potential.
Limited to 13 games, and far fewer minutes than would be available if he were healthy, Hageman has quietly made the most of the court time provided to him. Also quietly, Hageman is also rounding into a future collegiate prospect.
Thus far in 2018-19, Hageman averages 13.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals a night.
As a 6-foot-1 sophomore, Hageman’s skill set as a potential scoring wing is projectable. He likely will grow, and already has an exceptional wingspan for his height. Hageman is quick off the floor, which gives him an advantage in post scoring, rebounding and shot blocking.
Hageman uses his length, and his strength, effectively, both on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.
Against a versatile Frederick team on Thursday night, he blocked three shots and came up with several steals while being forced to cover a lot of ground against a balanced, 3-point shooting club. Offensively, he was featured as the high-post, point man. Hageman, also possibly still limited by injury, didn’t shine on offense but it was made clear in postgame interviews with Frederick head coach Enoch Miller that keeping him under wraps was a major piece of the Warriors’ game plan.
When is healthy, Hageman remains a key contributor for a Windsor club that has battled a number of injuries this winter. He has scored double figures in all but two of the 13 games he has played in this season, despite being a clear focus of opposing clubs’ strategy.
Everything appears to be lining up for the Wizards as the playoffs approach. Hageman, in turn, appears to be poised for a breakout season as a sophomore. Injury issues have limited his exposure, but he certainly is a player to keep an eye on.
