Prep Hoops is here to give you the rundown on who stood out.
Players of the Week
Aidan Clarey (6’2 2020 G, Brookfield Academy)- Already with over 1,200 career points, Aidan has been delivering quality performances for his whole career at Brookfield Academy. This past week was no different as he started out by scoring 27 points, including 5 three pointers, in a win over Heritage Christian. He added in 8 rebounds and 7 assists in that performance as well. Then in a win over Living Word Lutheran he scored 18 points while grabbing 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Aidan is a quick guard who can light up the nets from well beyond the arc, but also get inside and finish. His dangerous offensive skillset has allowed him to put up nearly 20 ppg over his three year career, and he has shown no signs of slowing down.
David Joplin (6’6 2021 F, Brookfield Central)- Sticking with the Brookfield theme, Central’s David Joplin had himself a week, using his size and budding skillset to put up some solid numbers through three games. He started off with a double-double against crosstown rivals Brookfield East, finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds in the contest. He followed that up against Sussex Hamilton with yet another double-double, this time with 30 points and 14 rebounds. In Central’s final game of the week, David scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting while facing off against one of the top junior forwards in the country. David has good length, combined with increased athleticism that is making him a threat to finish above the rim. He’s displayed good footwork inside leading to easy post scores, while also increasing the consistency of his jumper.
Patrick Baldwin Jr. (6’9 2021 G, Sussex Hamilton)- Considered by many to be the nation’s top sophomore prospect, Patrick showed just why with a big game against Brookfield Central. Always demanding widespread attention from opposing defenses, Patrick still managed to put up an impressive 23 points in the win over one of the top teams in the state. He shot 4-5 from beyond the arc, and at 6’9 that deep shot is almost impossible to guard as a defender. Constantly drawing double teams, Patrick doesn’t force any of his offense unless necessary, and his unselfishness has led his team to a strong season thus far, looking like the team to beat in Division One. Patrick continues to grow athletically, and if he can increase his quickness and leaping ability, he’ll be a scary match-up for anyone in the country.
Jordan Majeed (5’11 2020 G, Beloit Turner)- Jordan is a player who has seen his production skyrocket as a junior, going from sixth man as a sophomore, to leading his team in scoring this year. After a 43 point game a few weeks ago, Majeed again dominated by scoring 35 points in a win over Evansville. He also grabbed 3 boards and dished out 3 assists in the effort. Majeed is a solid three point shooter, but does most of his work by getting to the basket and either finishing or drawing fouls. When in attack-mode, he is very dangerous to stop as he can finish with ease, and if fouled he shoots close to 80% from the charity stripe. Jordan has scored in double figures every game this season, and has been a major threat for Beloit Turner in the Rock Valley Conference.
Brandin Podziemski (6’4 2021 G, Saint John’s NW Military Academy)- Brandin has been having an extremely successful sophomore season, averaging a double-double while leading his team to a 12-1 record thus far. This past week Brandin scored 15 points and hauled in 9 rebounds to get a win over University School. He followed that up the very next day with a 32 point outburst in a win over Pius XI, while also grabbing 11 rebounds. In the win he shot 12-13 from the field, including an impressive 5-5 from distance. Brandin is a long and wiry guard at 6’4, who is able to stretch the floor with his shooting touch from range. The lefty is also quick for his size with the ability to get to the rim and finish at an efficient rate. For a guard Brandin rebounds extremely well, using his length and fighting for position to reel in 10.8 rpg.
Team of the Week
Milwaukee Vincent- Vincent pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the City Conference this season by taking down a loaded Milwaukee Washington squad. Led by four double-figure scorers, Vincent was able to win 65-55, an impressive feat for such an inexperienced squad. A pair of talented sophomores led the way for Vincent, with Carnell Stevens putting up 14 points and Dajon Malone scoring 12. Roby Lemeir and Calvin Walker both scored 11 to round out the top scorers. Vincent is a team that won’t standout with any big name players, but they have a team loaded with quick guards that can push the tempo on offense and create a lot of turnovers with their high pressure defense. With some good young players to build around, Vincent looks set for a promising future, and will look to finish off this season strong.
Upset of the Week
Ashwaubenon beats Green Bay Southwest 73-67- Last week Ashwaubenon handed Green Bay SW their first loss of the season, sparking the upset with a big second half. On defense Ashwaubenon was able to hold South West to just two players in double figures, and allowed just 30 second half points to take over the game. Their offense spread the ball around, allowing for four players to score 13+ points. Christopher Morgan (16), Kyle Krueger (15), Matt Imig (14), and Marcus Wagner (13) were the players in double-digits for the winning side. Ashwaubenon is just 6-8 on the season, but proved that they aren’t a pushover in the Fox River Classic conference by taking down a state ranked opponent in Green Bay Southwest.
Sleeper of the Week
Maxwell Glass (6’2 2020 F, Kenosha Bradford)- Though short for his position, Maxwell brings strength and physicality down low, with the ability to stretch the floor outside. Last week in Bradford’s lone game, Max led his team to a big win over rivals Kenosha Tremper by scoring 31 points. Glass uses his nimble footwork and strength to score around the rim, whether it be bullying a defender, or using his agility to get around him inside. He can also take his defender beyond the arc where he has range that extends a few feet behind the line, making him a dangerous guard for players not strong at perimeter defense. His inside-out ability makes him a difficult match-up, as his opponent has to be a versatile enough defender to stick with him at all areas on the floor. This versatility has allowed him to average 16 ppg as a junior for a rebuilding Kenosha Bradford team.
Freshman of the Week
Maximus Nelson (6’7 2022 F, Appleton North)- One of the state’s elite freshman, Maximus continued his strong campaign in one game last week for Appleton North. They took on Appleton West, and in the loss Nelson recorded a tough 16 points. He has only been getting better as the season goes on, scoring 16+ in three straight games while playing in one of the state’s toughest conferences. He is a long stretch-four prospect who already has the tools to dominate from the perimeter. He can knock down threes but also excels in taking defenders off the dribble and using his length and touch to finish around the rim. Maximus is the type of freshman that doesn’t play like a 14-15 year old, showing poise and maturity not often found at his age which has allowed him to have such a succesful start to his freshman year.
