A gym rat who loves practice, Cartelli (Jr., 5-10) is working hard in the hope of getting an opportunity to play in college. Cartelli has a set of tools that already makes him a fringy prospect but in order to make a better case for his ability to contribute at the next level, Cartelli needs to become more consistent.
He knows this, hence all the extra time Cartelli is spending hard at work on improving his game.
“I know he would love to play college basketball,” Frederick head coach Enoch Miller said. “Joe is deceivingly athletic. The biggest thing about him is that he’s got good basketball DNA. He’s smart, he’s intelligent and he has a good feel for the game. He’s a hard worker and he’s always doing whatever he can to get better.”
Cartelli has the ability to impact the outcome of a game from behind the 3-point arc. He also, however, is a streaky shooter at times. When he’s has gotten going early on this season, Cartelli has shot 50 percent or better from 3-point range in four of nine games. In the other five games, he shot 15 percent (5 for 33) from long range.
Averaging 14.1 points per game, Cartelli also has the ability to score in the paint and at the free-throw line. He has scored in double figures in five of the nine games Frederick has played and has put up 25 or more points twice.
“He handles the ball and penetrates well, and he’s a lights-out shooter when he catches fire,” Miller said. “Joe also know how to use his body to finish and get to the free-throw line.”
Cartelli led the Warriors in scoring with 10.8 ppg as a sophomore last season. Frederick went 1-22 that year but Cartelli’s maturation, among other things, have helped the Warriors turn things around and they are 6-3 to this point in 2019. He is also averaging 3.1 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.7 assists as a junior.
