The odds that both players’ parallel careers would result in them reaching such an impressive career accomplishment in the same game were extremely low. But it happened anyway.
Late in the fourth quarter of a 72-52 win for the Tigers, both Baird and Helbig hit the career milestone within minutes of one another. Helbig, who will play football for Colorado State University next year, finished with 19 points and Baird scored a game-high 27.
Baird, one of the top recruits in Colorado who remains unsigned, shot 59 percent (10 for 17) from the floor, 50 percent (2 for 4) from 3-point range and 100 percent (5 for 5) at the free-throw line. He also had six rebounds and three assists to help lead the No. 3-ranked Tigers to a win.
“Coming in, we knew exactly how many we needed tonight and we really weren’t sure if we were going to get it because it was a lot of points for both of us,” Baird told Holy Family athletics writer Jon Yunt after the game. “As the game went on, it just got more high scoring.”
On the season, Baird, a 6-foot-3 guard, is averaging 16.5 point, 2.7 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.
Also against Erie on Thursday, Holy Family’s Adam Jolly (Sr., 6-5, F) had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Seven of his 10 boards with of the offensive variety. Point guard Dominic Nellis scored four points and dished out 10 assists.
