Now that the calendar has turned from 2018 to 2019 and most teams have entered conference play, let’s take a look at who the leading scorers in Colorado’s Class 4A division are and how they’re getting it done.
1. Jackson Hayslip, 6-0, G, Greeley Central, 2019, 25.1 ppg
Hayslip’s 25.1-point average through eight games isn’t just the top scoring output in 4A, it’s the third best at this point in the season regardless of classification. His 3.5 steals and 6.3 rebounds have helped him generate extra scoring opportunities for himself and he his making the most of all his scoring chances, wherever they come from, by shooting over 50 percent from the field. Hayslip staying hot could go a long way for the No. 4-ranked Wildcats as they enter a tough Northern League schedule.
2. Javonte Johnson, 6-6, G/F, Cheyenne Mountain, 2020, 24.9 ppg
Johnson has had a couple of absolutely monster games already in 2018-19. Against Widefield on Nov. 27, he dropped 40 points (14 for 19 shooting) and then turned around a couple weeks later and scored 39 points (4 for 6 on 3-pointers) against Pueblo County on Dec. 15. At 6-foot-6, the junior has shown improved mechanics and shot selection out on the perimeter, where he is making 43 percent (15 for 35) of his shots so far this season to lead the No. 5 Indians.
3. Gabe Rall, 6-2, G, Canon City, 2019, 22.1 ppg
No one in 4A has taken more shots and no one in the classification has made more 3-pointers through the early portion of the season than Rall, who is a productive rebounder (6.9 per game) for a guard. Also averaging 4.0 steals per game, Rall is shooting 29 percent from 3-point range but makes 43 percent of his shots inside the arc.
4. Wyatt Buller, 6-1, G, Summit, 2019, 20.9 ppg
This sharpshooter from Frisco has shot the ball nearly as well from 3-point range (48 percent) as he has from the field (49 percent) overall. He has made 27 of his 56 beep-ball attempts and has made 50 of 55 free-throw attempts (91 percent) this season. Buller is currently accounting for just over one third of the Tigers’ total scoring per game.
5. Ilja Bubukin, 6-3, F, Golden, 2019, 19.8 ppg
Bubukin has helped pull the Demons through some scoring droughts this season and has also seen his scoring output balloon from 5.9 point a game as a junior in 2017-18 to 19.8 per night this season. Bubukin has not played in the Demon’s last two games since he scored just six points on five shot attempts in a 82-49 loss to Windsor on Dec. 15, according to MaxPreps.com.
