The shifty 5-foot-9, 145-pound point guard is coming off an all-league campaign as a sophomore and he’s ready to do even bigger things as a junior. Sato played some AAU ball last spring, but used the summer months to train individually for 2018-19.
“I took the summer off to get in the weight room and with my game, I tried to get in the gym with my AAU coach,” Sato said. “I worked on my offensive game, my ball-handling, my shooting – both off the dribble and catch and shoot.”
Sato is the engine that makes the Apollos engine run. He capably runs the offense, getting the ball out to Sunset’s shooters but can also knock down the open jumper. Colleges have started taking a look at him for the next level and Sato notes that some Division II and Division III schools have gotten in touch with head coach Todd Sherwood.
“They’ve been watching me, so I’ve got to keep my game up as I want to do good in front of the scouts,” Sato said. “If I’m able to go D-II and get some scholarship money for my mom and dad so if they don’t have to pay, then that would be amazing. I like marketing and accounting – for our classes there have been some guest speakers that have come and to work for someone like Nike or Jordan (Brand), that would seem kinda fun.”
Sato is just a junior so there’s no rush for any decisions. He’s looking forward to this season which has started off 2-0 with victories over Newberg and North Medford. “I have some great teammates – they’re my friends outside of basketball too,” Sato said. “I think we’re going to have an unbelievable season. My goal for us is definitely first in Metro (League) and then the Chiles Center. I think we can do it, we’ve just got to put in the effort and work.”
Sato currently ranks as the #30 player in the PrepHoops Class of 2020 rankings.
