Recruiting Report: Kyrele Benford (2018)
Six-foot-5 forward Kyrele Benford of Doherty put in a ton of off-season work to get ready for his final season.
“This offseason I trained constantly, every day,” Benford told Prep Hoops. “Three or four times a day. I played with the Colorado Hawks throughout the summer. Helped me to get better at all aspects of my game. My junior year was good but felt like I was held back a lot.”
Benford gave a 20-4 team from Doherty a 9.5 point and six rebound per game average as a junior. This winter he wants to be a more versatile offensive weapon.
“I focused a lot of my offseason on becoming faster, being a better ball handler, a better shooter and being able to play away from the ball.”
After a 20 win season expectations are high for Kyrele and his teammates.
“We have a lot of talent returning from the bigs and guards, it should be a big year for us,” Benford said. “I believe we have the talent to win it all this year. We aren’t holding the standard any lower for us.”
Benford and his teammates have a new coach and he believes he and his team will flourish this winter.
“My goal for this season is to be Player of the Year for our conference and to lead my team to state,” Benford said. “Also, to develop all our younger guys and really be a leader on and off the court.
“Our team goals is to really buy into our new coach and really become a family on the court and from there we believe we can get to state.”
Benford has some programs interested but he’s keeping his college information in home at the moment.
“I have a couple offers and plan to visit some schools during season. For now my family and I have decided to keep it between us until the time comes.”
