Recruiting Report: Matt Wheelock (2019)
Regis Jesuit 6-foot-8 power forward Matt Wheelock has began hearing from schools at the division one and division two level and has visited several programs.
“Some schools that I have talked to are Denver University, Northern Colorado, Drake, University of South Dakota and Augustana,” Wheelock stated.
“I don’t have any plans to visit right now but over the summer I visited South Dakota, Augustana, Colorado, UCSD, UC-Irvine and Loyola Marymount.”
Wheelock played with Billups Elite this spring and summer and he spent a lot of time learning from his trainer.
“A highlight of my summer season was definitely working with my trainer Derek Griffin and really improving my outside game,” Matt stated. “Over the last few months though I have work on learning to use my body and having a diverse package of finishes around the rim.
“This season I feel like I will be able to help my team because I can score all over the court and make teams guard me on the perimeter to open lanes for my teammates.”
In working with his trainer, and on his own Wheelock has goals for himself and his team.
“I’m working on just getting stronger and faster on the physical aspect and then really growing close with my teammates so we can become a family and can be firing on all cylinders come December,” Matt stated.
“This winter is huge for us because as a team we have four of our five starters coming back and a strong bench with kids I want toplay with.
“Obviously a phenomenal coach in Coach Shaw who has us playing as one and playing how the game is supposed to be played. The sky is the limit for us we have the talent and the coaching it is up to us to put the pieces to be successful. That is what I feel is most important for me is being the best player and teammate I can be.”
Matt has several professional players that he has watched close over the years and enjoyed the way they play.
“Kevin Love that’s my favorite player and who I want to model my game after but also players like Gordan Heyward, Kawahi Leonard, and Timothy Mozgov.”
