With the release of our latest 2019 Prospect Rankings, we look to break down each position. Prep Hoops Kentucky breaks down the top point guards here:
David Johnson, Louisville Trinity (6’4, CG)
Johnson is ranked as the #1 Kentucky prospect in the 2019 class through a number of different scouting services. He is Prep Hoops Kentucky’s projected #1 prospect and ranks #31 (#5 at his position) nationally according to Scout.com. This summer he was invited to attend the USA U16 training camp, and although he didn’t make the final roster, competed well and stood out during the training camp. He helped lead Trinity to a 29-4 overall record as a sophomore. Louisville, Xavier, and Cincinnati have offered, with Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech all showing interest. You can find Johnson competing with the Louisville Magic in July.
Dekeyvan Tandy, University Heights Academy (6’2, PG)
Tandy averaged 23.6 points per game and 4 rebounds while leading the UHA offense at the point guard position. He currently holds offers from Oklahoma, Florida, and New Mexico State. Tandy is a versatile scorer, able to go downhill and score at the rim while also pulling up off the dribble. He sees the floor well, too. Tandy, along with David Johnson, will be running with the Louisville Magic in July.
Korbin Spencer, Hargrave Military Academy (6’0, PG)
Spencer is transferring from Elliott County High School (KY). We’ve enjoyed covering him here with PHKY and would be remiss not to include him on our lists one last time. Spencer helped lead Elliott County to another state tournament run last season, averaging 22.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore. He also shot the ball front he field at a rate of over 50% (41% from 3-pt range). Spencer has a number of D1 schools interested in him, including Wisconsin (visited), Marshall (visited). Spencer is hoping to compete against the highest level out there while attending Hargrave Military Academy in Virgina.
Diablo Stewart, Franklin County High School (5’10, PG)
Stewart averaged just over 18 points per game as a sophomore last season at Franklin County High School in Frankfort, KY. His most memorable game undoubtedly had to be his 29 point performance against Frankfort to win the 41st District Tournament. He also had 6 rebounds in the contest while leading the Flyers as their floor general.
Cade Cunningham, Madisonville-North Hopkins (6’0, CG)
Cunningham has had quite the summer. He had an impressive showing at Ric Bouls’ Blue-Chip Camp, earning a spot on the top 20 all-star game roster (beating out 160 campers). At Next Up Recruits Elite Camp, Cunningham showed the ability to be a knockdown shooter from deep as well as creating for himself and teammates off the dribble. Cunningham holds an offer from Brescia University (NAIA) already. He averaged just 6 points a game last season as a sophomore. Expect that number to increase immensely next season.
Hunter McCutcheon, Louisville Male (5’11, PG)
McCutcheon averaged just under 14 points per game last season for the Bulldogs of Louisville Male, shooting the ball around 45% from the field. In Male’s district tournament final game, he shot over 60% from the field and led the team in scoring with 14 that night, defeating St. Xavier to win the title.
Isaiah Allen, Tates Creek High School (6’0, PG)
Allen averaged 16.7 points per game as a sophomore while shooting right at 41% from the field. Shoots it ok from 3-pt range, at 35% (156 attempts). Allen hopes a strong junior season and a new head coach can help improve the Commodores standing in the 11th Region.
Carter Baughman, Mercer County High School (5’10, PG)
Carter is an up and coming point guard coming out of Mercer County High who has had a pretty good summer thus far. He averaged just over 5 points per game last season as a sophomore, shooting 41% from 3-pt range.
Adam Sizemore, North Laurel (5’10, PG)
All signs point to Sizemore having a breakout season with North Laurel as a junior next year. With Peyton Broughton graduating and heading off to play college ball at Eastern Kentucky, that should create more opportunities for Sizemore to take on some leadership responsibility as well as more touches on the court.
Javen Hardin, Lexington Catholic (6’1, PG)
Hardin averaged just over 5 points per game last season with Lexington Catholic, sharing back-burner minutes with Luke Johnson, who will be playing at D-1 Loyola Maryland this upcoming season. Look for Hardin to be yet another player who could take off now that he won’t be sharing minutes.
Ryan Mathis, Graves County (6’0, PG)
Mathis averaged just over 13 points per game, helping lead Graves County to a state tournament appearance last season. He shot just under 40% from the field. He scored in double-digits in Graves County’s regional championship victory.
