We’ll have detailed breakdowns in the coming days of the heavy action we took in on Sunday.
But I wanted to get up a few quick thoughts. (Big thanks to Silver, MiDian Holmes and the WCE crew for the hospitality.)
Great matchups
We got a rare chance Sunday to see 2017 top player D’Shawn Schwartz and 2018 No. 1 Daylen Kountz play against each other during the camp. The best part: Neither player backed down. The long, athletic wings kept going at each other, with each alternating attacks at the basket, and spins into mid-range jump shots, etc. Each had their success and each had some defensive stops thrown in. It was nice to see the two players take advantage of the opportunity.
Another great matchup came when Smoky Hill junior forwards John Harge and Will Becker matched up against one another early in the afternoon. Nothing they haven’t seen in practice, right? Both players were sound, but Becker was one of the best players in the gym overall on Sunday. He’s handling the ball, shooting at an effective clip and continuing to surge as a disruptive rim protector.
Freshman to watch
Ty Foster, a 2020 guard out of Lincoln, is going to be a player to watch as he begins his freshman season. He’s 5-10 but can easily reach the rim, really strong athletically with nice burst. He’s got nice feel and really competes.
Under-the-radar 2017s stand out
There were some really nice performances on Sunday from some 2017 players who have flown under the radar a bit but could be in for breakout seasons. Nick Holmes, the 6-1 senior guard at Overland, has really improved his game. Holmes is really starting to find his rhythm and with that has come confidence. He’s got the athleticism to play at a small-college level, and now his game is starting to catch up with that.
Andrew Mays, a 6-3 guard at Ponderosa, also had some nice moments. He’s a decent shooter and smart with the basketball in his hands.
We’ll have plenty more about some of these 2017s coming soon.
Did you see that?
Jaizec Lottie nearly brought the house down. During a morning game, Lottie, the 6-0 senior guard at Cherokee Trail, drove the lane, found an opening and skied toward the rim. He finished with authority over a defender, leading to roars in the gym. We’ll post the video once it surfaces.
Lottie overall had a great day at the camp. He’s really improved his explosiveness over the past couple months and is going to be a steal for the Division I program that offers him. We’ll have more on Lottie soon.
