Among the content we’ll providing periodically until the start of the season is a look at 20 candidates for the Prep Hoops Colorado Player of the Year Award. Our inaugural award last season went to Overland’s De’Ron Davis.
So who is today’s candidate?
Kenny Foster
Foster is the only sophomore to make our cut as a Player of the Year candidate, a distinction he earned with a stellar freshman season at Smoky Hill.
During his first season with the Buffs, Foster averaged 18.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and two assists per game, holding his own as one of the most talented players in the cutthroat Centennial League.
Foster may not have to put up the same numbers during his sophomore season, with Hill benefitting from the return from injury of big men Will Becker and John Harge, the addition of talented guards Quinten Rock and Eugene Rivers and the development of wing Jahwan Phillips.
Still, Foster is the young team’s unquestioned leader. Nearing 6-foot-5, Foster can create mismatches all over the court and he knows how to exploit them. One of the biggest improvements we’ve seen in him since his freshman season is his tenacity rebounding the basketball. That’s saying something for a guy who already averaged better than six boards per game as a freshman.
Foster will constantly get to the line this season. He’s strong and invites contact, with the ability to finish through it.
Foster is a candidate for the POY award because Smoky Hill has a chance to be a breakout team that makes a deep playoff run.
If that does happen, expect Foster to be at the forefront.
