Among the content we’ll providing periodically until the start of the season is a look at 20 candidates for the Prep Hoops Colorado Player of the Year Award. Our inaugural award last season went to Overland’s De’Ron Davis.
So who is today’s candidate?
Colbey Ross
There will be no sneaking up on anyone this year. Eaglecrest was a wire to wire top contender last season that marched all the way to the championship game in the 5A state tournament with a largely unknown cast outside of one player: Colbey Ross.
What the 6-1 guard did was lift his team and raise the level of those around him. Along the way, Ross averaged 18.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while being named the Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year.
Ross enters his senior season with his college future mapped out, having committed to Pepperdine late in the summer. So what’s in store for Ross before he reaches that level? The sky is the limit.
With that strong supporting cast having now gained valuable experience during last year’s run, watch for Ross to grow even more as a player and facilitator, leaning on his teammates as he has before with a mix of high IQ and skill.
But when Eaglecrest has to have a bucket in big moments, it sure will be nice to have the top-rated guard in the state to lean on.
And make no mistake: Ross will be quick to pass up this or any other award if it leads to the only thing missing from his high school basketball resume — that coveted state title.
