This offseason, he went about figuring out the best way to sharpen those tools.
“I did a few sessions with my personal trainer,” Martinez said, referring to B&B Academy director Stephen Bahl. “We really focused on driving to the hoop more because, of course, at 6-6 and lengthy, a lot of players my size might not have the versatility of being able to get to the hoop that fast. So I’ve been trying to work on my feet and having a quick first step to the hoop, getting my shot off quicker and just getting to the rim.”
Martinez is an intriguing player because of his motor and the aforementioned athleticism that has him becoming a consistent above-the-rim finisher, a lob option in transition.
Martinez averaged 5.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game and served as an energy player for a team that finished 16-8, suffering a narrow loss to Chaparral in the first round of the 5A playoffs. During Metro State team camp back in June, we got a good look at Martinez and saw a player who had clearly worked on becoming a more complete player. He’s got a pretty fluid mid-range jump shot, and you can see the work he’s put into getting to the basket efficiently.
But the most impressive thing about Martinez, which we saw again at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo in Lakewood last month, was his constantly churning motor. He gets up and down the court really well for a player his size. The effort results in consistent rebounds, putbacks and blocked shots.
“I try to use it as an advantage, just get up and down the court,” Martinez said. “It just adds another element to my game that I like to use.”
Naturally, Martinez is champing at the bit to begin his junior season on an Eagles team that has high hopes.
“As a team I think we have some weapons,” Martinez said. “We have drivers, shooters, and all aspects of the game. Most importantly, I think our togetherness and the way we play well with each other, we’re already seeing great chemistry, and that’s going to make the biggest difference.”
Important to note: Martinez is a sky-high academic performer. He has a 3.8 unweighted GPA and a 4.1 weighted GPA. And he’s already receiving college interest based on his academics. College basketball attention to this point is limited, but here guessing that will change in short order.
