Among the content we’ll providing periodically until the start of the season is a look at 20 candidates for the Prep Hoops Colorado Player of the Year Award. Our inaugural award last season went to Overland’s De’Ron Davis.
Today’s candidate:
LeChaun Duhart
There have been many times we’ve evaluated Duhart over the past high school and grassroots seasons where we thought a defense had him trapped or contained.
Rarely was that actually the case.
The 5-11 Grandview senior is among the state’s most elusive with the ball in his hands, his talent for control owed to both his quickness and his fundamentals with the basketball. Duhart has a great understanding of how to use his body to create space, often sneaking into cracks in the defense to make plays for himself and others.
In a strong season for Grandview last season — the Wolves were 13-11, went 7-7 in the Centennial League and made the playoffs — Duhart was the heartbeat. He averaged 19.4 points per game, shot 38 percent from 3-point range (42-for-111) and brought a general tenacity that his teammates drew from.
Grandview should have another strong season and has a chance to take a step forward with the likes of Gage Prim and Ben Boone returning and sophomore Levi Dombro transferring in from Regis Jesuit. Plus, the Wolves have a lot of other intriguing talent coming up the ranks.
But Duhart is the engine that drives the bus, one escape from a defense at time. Watch for a big season out of the senior guard, one that should have him in the mix for our top award.
