Among the content we’ll providing periodically until the start of the season is a look at 20 candidates for the Prep Hoops Colorado Player of the Year Award. Our inaugural award last season went to Overland’s De’Ron Davis.
So who’s today’s candidate?
Jon’il Fugett
Fugett is coming off a sophomore season in which he averaged 14.4 points and three assists for a George Washington team that had a perfect march through the Denver Public League.
The Patriots will have their sights set even higher this season, targeting a deep playoff run in large part due to the tools that their junior point guard will bring to the table.
We saw a lot of Fugett during the spring and summer, and he’s taken even further strides since that great sophomore season. He’s one of the most competitive players in the state, refusing to budge and inch on either side of the ball.
An anecdote: At our Prep Hoops Spring Kick Off back in April, the Hawks 16U squad, playing up a division, drew the Shining Stars’ 17U squad and star Kolton Peterson. One of the top 2017 players in the state, Peterson can score the ball while handling or coming off the ball.
The 5-11 Fugett set the tone for his team’s entire tournament with the way he harassed and limited Peterson, who went on to have a great grassroots season himself. It’s the tenacity and energy he brings to that side of the ball that often sets him apart.
Fugett had two giant steals in the Hawks’ final tournament, the Adidas Summer Championships, that also led to victories. He’s proven that he’s clutch and doesn’t shy away from big moments.
Also, Fugett has developed himself into one of the state’s top 3-point shooters, making him a supreme scoring threat. Losing Daylen Kountz, who transferred to Denver East, will be a tough blow for the Patriots, but expect Fugett and brother Calvin (2017) to elevate their play even more alongside talented 6-4 guard Jervay Green and 6-8 big man Tray Pierce and put GW in position for a big position.
And watch for the electric point guard to have a big season.
